Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Dear Editor: April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This year’s theme, “Engaging New Voices,” builds on the idea that we are stronger together, and that new partners and community members are needed to expand sexual assault prevention efforts. There are many ways to embrace one’s voice, from practicing or providing consent to speaking out against stereotypes or gender biases. We can all help the next generation foster attitudes that promote healthy relationships, equality, and respect. Nearly one in five women and one in 71 men are victims of sexual assault (Black et al., ...

In support

Dear Editor: Judge Ashley Pike has an excellent record of service, integrity and knowledge of the law in Columbiana County. His dedication to the people of Columbiana County is documented by the many cases, sentences and order in our court systems, both Common Pleas and Juvenile. As a retired educator, I remember his assistance with a student who did not have good parental guidance. Judge Pike immediately offered his assistance when I asked for advice. Judge Pike’s expertise has frequently been recognized outside the political boundaries of Columbiana County. He was appointed to ...

Great Lenten season

Dear Editor: My bucket list just became shorter. Everyone should see these services at least once in their lifetime. For the first time, my children and I participated in the Wellsville Ministerial breakfast at Covenant Presbyterian Church, where the Rev. Kenny Stull was the keynote speaker and Good Friday cross walk from the Gazebo to Elevate, where the speaker was Josh Lytle. A stirring sermon and musical selections at both churches were followed by fellowship and thoroughly enjoyed refreshments. At Elevate, we were invited to Rev. Peachey’s Baptist Church for a service led by ...

No return call

Dear Editor: As this is an election year, we will be asked by the candidates to vote for them. I believe one of the first responsibilities of an elected official is to respond to the calls or letters of their constituents. I have phoned Sen. Ryan Ferns’ offices a minimum of nine times (Feb. 28, March 2, 14, 19, 23 (twice), 24, 27 and 30). With each phone call, I requested that Sen. Ferns return my phone calls as I wished to speak to him personally. As of this writing, I have yet to receive a phone call from Sen. Ferns. In sharing this situation with several local citizens of ...

Not a fan

Dear Editor: One of the oldest political tricks in the book is the “bait and switch” personal attack. This campaign tactic is designed to take your mind away from the central issues of a campaign by assassinating the character of one’s opponent. Or, that of the political party backing an opponent. It’s best that “others” wage such an attack, though. This way there is at least the appearance that nothing underhanded and/or wretched would come from the mouth or the pen of the beloved candidate. Rather, let the attack come from some innocuous soul perhaps residing in another ...

Schools preventing obesity

Dear Editor: In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). School is a common location at which children spend an average of 6-7 hours a day at, which is a majority part of their hours while awake. Thus, school is one primary setting that could be ideal for preventing obesity. Without a strong contribution from schools, we are not likely to reverse the obesity epidemic. Although schools cannot completely solve the epidemic, without them being strongly involved it is unlikely for ...
