Transparency lacking

Dear Editor: Since the July 1, 2016, animal shelter takeover, shelter operational transparency has been lacking. Before the Commission’s shelter takeover, someone called county residents offering a full-time and about six part-time positions at the shelter. Normal county hiring practice requires publishing a position in the newspaper and interviewing for it. Who made the decision to not follow the normal hiring practice and who made these phone calls? Since our tax dollars pay for these positions, we should know. About 13 months ago, the shelter began destroying animals at the ...

Not her business

Dear Editor: I have a suggestion for the short, stocky white-haired woman who seemed to delight in yelling at me while telling me what to do during a crowding situation in the checkout lines at Walmart in Calcutta on the morning of May 23 around 8 a.m. .... She needs to get a grip on herself. She was just a customer like me. She had no right to yell as I didn’t give her a reason and she had no business interjecting herself into the event as nobody requested her assistance and didn’t need it, either. A tip for how she can make other future shopping experiences better: keep her ...

Gimme the Tweets

Dear Editor: Tweets or twaddle, which do you prefer? Donald Trump tweets, some of his predecessors twaddled. Many, however, have mistaken twaddle for profound speech, especially coming from a holder of the Oval Office. Many offenders come to mind, but for the sake of brevity, it’s not necessary to look beyond George W. Bush. Bush Jr. groaned while attempting to convey his message. His words were parched, coming as they did from a downward-cornered mouth, lending the impression the man was constipated. He cannot be criticized too much for this as he’d inherited this trait from ...

Special thanks

Dear Editor: Thanks to everyone who helped to make the Garfield Elementary Bike Rodeo a great success. The various departments of the village were a huge help, as were our sponsors: East Liverpool City Hospital, Huntington Bank, Columbiana County ESC, Garfield PTO, Wellsville Police, and Stitched With Love. Special thanks to residents of Broadway who made sure the bike path was totally clear for the safety of the kids. Lisa Ferguson Wellsville

Must read

Dear Editor: An explosive new book, a journal by local resident and author Mary Ann Reuter — “Living in my Own Shadow” — is a “must read,” for locals especially. An accusatory account of her 50-year secret, the molestation of her by her stepfather, a local educator, when she was nine years old. The accused, now deceased, had married her mother, who along with her father, were prominent area residents and owners of a well-known East Liverpool dairy and restaurant. After 50 years, she tells all. The now-accused pedophile swore her to secrecy so was never charged. ...

Blessed

Dear Editor: This month we celebrate Mother’s Day and two weeks later we observe Memorial Day. In combining these two observances, for some it’s a very difficult time of the year. Memories of loved ones gone on, whether it be a mother, father, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, grandparent, etc., can be a not so pleasant memory. We all have had both good and bad memories. Living in the past and holding on to the not so pleasant memories will keep us trapped and unable to move forward. Paul says in Philippians 3:13-14, “... this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, ...
