Commissioners should return money to taxpayers

To the editor: In 2016, the Hancock County Animal Shelter Excess Levy account balance had grown to over $365,000. Many county taxpayers believe the commissioners’ desire to gain access to this money motivated them to not renew the shelter contract with the nonprofit that operated it for the past two decades. The contract required an annual renewal by both parties. In May of 2016, the nonprofit successfully passed a $100,000 annual Excess Levy to help financially support operation of the shelter. Stop crying ‘wolf’ whenever you plain dislike someone

To the editor: When I was a youngster my mother told me a story of the little boy who cried "wolf." Briefly, it tells of a young lad who knew that all the neighbors would come running to the rescue if a wolf should be threatening the flock of lambs each of them had raised. The boy called out "wolf" and neighbors, armed with pitchforks, shotguns, etc., came to his aid. He thought it so amusing that he did it over and over again. To the editor: In the winter when the snow is deep and my driveway is blocked, my neighbor Dale Call doesn't hesitate to clear it. Just recently, while trying to get my lawn mower to work, Dale and his wife, Stacie, not only came to fix the mower, but also brought their mower. While Dale was fixing my mower, Stacie was using theirs to mow my lawn — and it is pretty large. I hesitate to call them for help because they both are employed and busy. To the editor: My middle son and I attended the annual Midland Sports Hall of Fame Award Luncheon, July 7th, and as usual Chris Shovlin emceed and was entertaining with his well researched biography of the inductees. The Hall of Fame committee deserves mention for their time and effort in bringing deserving nominees forth and recognized. The event was again catered by 5th Street Deli and a fine meal and deserts were provided.
