To the editor: There have been moments in the 38 years of my military career that will forever be etched in my memory. None of them are more memorable than the day in 2012 when I stood on an airport ramp while the flag-draped caskets of three of our fallen Ohio Army National Guard Soldiers were escorted off the airplane. Emotions ranged from anger to sympathy for the three heroes whose lives were cut short while serving their country. Heartbroken over reports of cemetery conditions

To the editor: Recent news articles and broadcasts about the conditions at Columbiana County Memorial Cemetery have left me heartbroken. A dear family friend, Lou Bozek, first alerted our family early this week to the lack of care being given to my parents’ gravesites . After reading articles and watching news footage I am devastated. The broken headstone she spoke of in her recent letter belongs to my parents. Little Lena Christine and letting babies live

To the editor: My wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to spend the winter in a warmer climate. The day after we got back to East Liverpool we went to see our great granddaughter. Little Lena Christine was one day old. She had ten toes and ten fingers, knew when she was hungry or needed a diaper changed. She knew her mommy and loved to be held close by those who love her. To the editor: Last week Columbiana County lost one of its foremost citizens, former County Sheriff Robert “Brass” Beresford of Wellsville. Brass loved his God and his family. He served his country as a Marine in both World War II and the Korean War. He was truly a member of “The Greatest Generation.” As such he asked for nothing and for no advantage in return for his service, only for the opportunity to raise his family in freedom and peace. To the editor: Physiognomy is the art of judging character from facial features. Everyone does it. Most of the time the gears remain in neutral, but oft-times when encountering a stranger, we size him up. Can I trust this person? Is his nose too long and his chin too weak? How about those beady eyes? Whether this is politically correct, judging a person at first glance is a safeguard, though one can often be wrong in his appraisal: the person you’ve judged as a skunk turns out to be one of the finest individuals you’ve ever met, and vise versa.
