Political UFO

Dear Editor:UFO - That could be the first thing that comes to mind when analyzing our current presidential process. The "U" could be "unqualified," "unimaginable," un???.The "F" refers to "for."And the "O" for "office."I know for me I have never been scared like this from any sci-fi movie. We even survived "Darth Vader" as VP a few years ago. But after watching the debates, it makes you wonder if Orson's epic should have been "War of the Words."Oh well, when it's all said and done, one of the parties will have their "ET" - executive trophy.Chip SchellLisbon

Don’t support those who support coal

Dear Editor:I am a coal miner's daughter of 3-plus generations. Abolishing coal as an industry would mean delivering freedom from the ill-health my family had to endure for generations, as well as future generations, in our county, state, and planet.Anyone who supports the coal industry wishes health issues to the miners and pollution to the air, and the ill-health of all who have to breathe it.We already live in Columbiana County, which has the highest rate of cancer and asthma in the United States. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is a gift the federal government has given us ...

Common sense when voting

Dear Editor:Wow! Where are we going? What are we becoming? The examples shown our youngsters and the public in general are unacceptable. TV news, advertisements and even movies rated A-OK have a lot to be desired. Talk about bad mannerisms, just watch the presidential debates.Donald Trump stops at nothing. He seems to let the rule of common decency go by the wayside. What concerns me is the fact that Trump is leading in the Republican polls. How anyone can want this man as our president just flabbergasts me - get my drift?I can't imagine him as our leader with his arrogance, ...

Council changes?

Dear Editor:I have been having thoughts recently about local government in East Liverpool. (Ever since our council raised its pay from $200 to $600 per month some time back.)Over the years, all the city departments have been reduced in size, due to a decreased tax base and shrinking population. The leaders, both council and administration, say the city must do more with less - less of everything but them.Every department has fewer people than it did in past years, but we still have seven members of council, and all the other elected officers, drawing salaries. I think the time has come ...

Thanks offered

Dear Editor:On behalf of the board of trustees, the superintendent and assistant superintendent of Thompson Park, I want to offer thanks to the 896 East Liverpool residents that voted in support of the 2-mill capital improvement levy on March 15. We do not take that support for granted. In the months ahead, the park board will be working diligently to get bids for major projects and pricing equipment. Once all priorities have been set, we hope to put a 5-year improvement plan into effect. Please be aware, however, that the money generated by the levy will not be available for a year or ...
