Fault in ourselves

Dear Editor:The state of the elected and those seeking to be elected is indeed pitiful. Many have commented on these individuals positively or negatively based upon an ideological bent. And this is exactly what those seeking and holding office want. They want to appeal to a base level instinct. Fear, anxiety, anger, hatred, and, yes, discrimination. All sides practice this ancient art, all sides are culpable in its use. Many regard the state of our politics in a very disparaging manner. But in actuality are the politicians not giving the populace what they want?In this "reality+ and ...

Care about future

Dear Editor:Columbiana County ranks highest in the United States with the highest rate of asthma and cancer victims. If we care about the future for our county, choose well who you vote for: President, Congressman, Representative, anyone with their wits about them will endorse candidates who will do all in their power to keep the EPA strong.Without the oversight of the Environmental Protection Agency to monitor our air and water, those who oppose the EPA support the wolves who would rather line their pockets with gold at the expense of our health and to their financial advantage. It ...

‘Ain’t broke’

Dear Editor:There is an old saying that fits the city's Board of Public Utilities: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."East Liverpool City Council has a full plate now, so it does not need to take on more than it can chew with everything currently planned and pending.Council needs to be concerned with what could happen by October if revenue does not increase. I went through fiscal emergency while on council, and t(city leaders) will want no part of another one.Chuck WadeEast Liverpool

Newlin name only on Route 7

Dear Editor:I'm writing in regard to of a piece in the paper about a section of state Route 7 being renamed.First of all, years ago, that same section of Route 7 - from Wellsville to East Liverpool - was named Melvin E. Newlin Memorial Highway. Newlin received the congressional medal of honor for the action he took in Vietnam on July 4, 1967. Their position was overrun by the enemy. After the enemy wounded him severely, he turned his m-60 machine gun around and continued to fire on the enemy killing many of them and saving American lives. It is sad to say, but the enemy finally killed ...

No discrimination

Dear Editor;I feel blessed to live in a town and area where same-gender marriage is not discriminated against.I know that with time, people's idea of what is acceptable and not acceptable change - coming from a small town I have never had an opposition from business in this area to discriminate while conducting business. As we can see many times day-in and day-out in the southern states, the local government officials are trying to pass anti-discrimination laws that they say will protect people in business from conducting things that are against their religious beliefs. But I feel and ...

Follow the law

Dear Editor:Recently, a newspaper article appeared with the headline "Bosel takes stand." After reading this, I was quite puzzled that anyone would think this was a good idea.I understand (county recorder Theresa) Bosel's frustration with these companies asking for so many public documents - maybe she is correct, companies are taking advantage of the law. However, Ms. Bosel is "taking a stand" with taxpayer money, not her own.She has already cost the taxpayers $3,000 in (legal fees) as part of a settlement for not complying with the law. The law has not changed. However, now, against ...
