Safety forces lauded

Dear Editor:In these times when there is so much negative reaction to law enforcement and other community responders, may I share with the tri-state area how blessed those of us are who live in Newell.About 12:45 am on Tuesday, a very large portion of Hancock County was plunged into darkness. Within the next half-hour, our Volunteer Fire Department rolled out the big truck and started patrolling the community. Not long after that I saw the Hancock County sheriff deputies joined them. This continued throughout the night, until power was restored.A big thanks to them. They do a wonderful ...

Pokemon welcome

Dear Editor:From all reports, we are about to embark on a new phenomenon, craze or experience. As for me, I have to scroll down a long way to find my year of birth when requested on those computer questionnaires. That is another way of saying I have seen many such fads come and go. Society has survived every one of them so far. Often we even enjoyed the experience. Pokemon Go is simply the latest of harmless diversions to catch the interest of young people. Roadwork needed

Dear Editor:I have seen the city repair some streets that needed addressed, and I am now asking for help from the mayor and safety service director to please fix Henry Avenue and Davis Street. These streets are worse than many the city has repaired. The city needs to quit wasting the funds we have on silly stuff we can do without and ...

She loved to help people and would do anything to make someone else happy or smile. The love she had for her family was, and is, easy to see. Besides her parents, Gary and Kathleen Blake Jr., and siblings, Gary III, Axl, Ali, Ryan and John, she also left behind three ...

Shelter thanked

Dear Editor:"Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals." - Milan Kundera.Gandhi said, briefly and clearly, "The greatest of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated."I have heard nothing but good of the Hancock County Animal Shelter. As a lifetime pet owner I sincerely thank them.Carol ChaffeeEast Liverpool

Need some answers

Dear Editor:I am writing this letter concerning events occurring in Hancock County. I am trying to understand what is happening between the Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation and the Hancock County commissioners. An article in The Review, dated June 9, 2016, by reporter Stephen Huba, explained the proposed contract. Written by the Commissioners' attorney, Michael Lucas III, the contract differed from the previous contracts in recent years, including the citing of a section of West Virginia code involving euthanasia.I called the commissioners office several times and received no ...
