Ohio Senate Bill 19 would address math comprehension

Ohio lawmakers digesting the results of the latest National Center for Education Statistics report card are right to be scrambling for ideas. One pitched by state Sen. Andrew Brenner, R-Delaware, is nothing new, but very much worth considering. Senate Bill 19 would require school districts or individual schools to develop math achievement improvement plans if they don’t have at least 52% of students receive a proficient score in math comprehension, according to a report by the Ohio Capital Journal. It would also require math improvement and monitoring plans for individual students who ...

Individuals reminded to get ‘gold star’ driver’s license

It seems like a lifetime ago — back in 2005, as a response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Congress passed the Real ID Act. At the time, the idea was to have the program implemented by 2008, but opposition and other delays pushed the timeline. Most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic extended more than once the deadline for individuals getting identification documents that satisfy Real ID Act standards. But now, the agreed-upon deadline is approaching rapidly. It is a mere three months away. Across the country, states are urging residents who have not already done so to collect the ...

Thanks to all for helping with Christmas in EL

To the editor: There was a magnificent 22-foot Christmas tree, with a beautiful star on top, standing in the Diamond area of our East Liverpool and I am forever grateful to all the people who donated the money so that we may see and enjoy it for many years to come. So many people have thanked me for this project but please understand it’s the people who donated the money that gets the credit. My dear friend, Frank Dawson, sat on the fountain wall with me and watched the tree being put together by the East Liverpool Street Department, section-by-section, until when it was finished and ...

GOP candidates for 2026 races coming into focus

The Republican candidates for next year’s statewide races are starting to come into focus. U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, the former lieutenant governor appointed to Congress’ upper chamber by Gov. Mike DeWine, will seek election to the seat next year. Husted will have to run again in 2028 for a full six-year term should he win in 2026. Husted likely won’t get a serious challenge in next year’s Republican primary. Husted had planned to run for governor in 2026. He wasn’t scaring off any opponents and at least three viable Republicans plan to run for governor. Attorney General Dave ...

Big Pharma’s agenda attacks families, free markets

To the editor: When it comes to the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs, one thing is clear: Big Pharma is the root of the problem. For decades, the pharmaceutical industry has wielded its power to drive up costs, manipulate markets, and protect its profits—all at the expense of hardworking American families and businesses. Now, Big Pharma is pushing policies in Congress that would further entrench its dominance and profits by deepening the financial burden on employers and everyday Americans. A coordinated attack on the private healthcare market is at the heart of this agenda. ...
