Thank you fair board

Dear Editor,I would like to acknowledge the fine job that the Columbiana County Fair Board has done the past several years. There have been many improvements to the fairgrounds and it is a good thing for our community. This Fair Board has been the most active board in a long time. I, too, walk the fairgrounds everyday and see many people working to plant flowers and take care of them, paving, improving the track for events, etc. Yes, there are always improvements to be made, but they will come.I don't think any of the board members would do anything to harm the environment, in fact, it ...

Supports Hancock County Commission in Animal Shelter flap

Dear Editor:I am writing on behalf of myself and my family in support of the recent actions taken by the county commission regarding the Hancock County Animal Shelter. The shelter as operated by the foundation was turning people away because there was no space, which was due to a no-kill or low-kill policy. If the foundation wishes to establish a shelter operated according to its own philosophy, it is free to do so with funds it raises itself. If it wishes to operate a county shelter supported by tax dollars, it must serve county residents and operate to the satisfaction of the county ...

Us versus them

Dear Editor:I listened to a radio talk show host and he was speaking of the "haves" versus the "have nots" in this upcoming election. Though he says he is a Trump supporter, he claims that the Trump needs a larger number of "angry white men" to win the election.Don't worry, I saw through the guise of this liberal rachet jaw, the struggle is "us" against "them," so just how do you distinguish between these categories? The "us" are only good for extracting money from and votes, of which the latter includes the dead. The category of "them" isn't difficult to distinguish either. The AG Loretta ...

I would like to thank Mr. Taylor, the secretaries and the custodians for a job well done.I would also like to thank the football team and the volunteers for helping with the valet parking.Planning a large event is so easy when you work with Bricker's. The staff did a great job and the food was delicious.I also would like to thank everyone who helped in any way, especially Deanna Plemons, who is the glue that holds ...

Safety forces lauded

Dear Editor:In these times when there is so much negative reaction to law enforcement and other community responders, may I share with the tri-state area how blessed those of us are who live in Newell.About 12:45 am on Tuesday, a very large portion of Hancock County was plunged into darkness. Within the next half-hour, our Volunteer Fire Department rolled out the big truck and started patrolling the community. Not long after that I saw the Hancock County sheriff deputies joined them. This continued throughout the night, until power was restored.A big thanks to them. They do a wonderful ...

Pokemon welcome

Dear Editor:From all reports, we are about to embark on a new phenomenon, craze or experience. As for me, I have to scroll down a long way to find my year of birth when requested on those computer questionnaires. That is another way of saying I have seen many such fads come and go. Society has survived every one of them so far. Often we even enjoyed the experience. Pokemon Go is simply the latest of harmless diversions to catch the interest of young people. Distractions from daily life can replace monotony and even give us reason to smile a little from time to time. Our local newspaper ...
