Try looking at past tragedies and hardships

To the editor: As we watch the evening news and the talking heads present us with the doom and gloom that this virus is causing us in 2020, I’m sure we all feel more than a little concerned. After all we are watching — according to everyone from “entertainment ,” talk show hosts and news anchors — an unprecedented disruption. We are experiencing (according to the “experts”) a world crisis no one has ever seen. Economies are cratering, jobless rates are skyrocketing, and as of May we have over 50,000 deaths in American alone. “MORE THAN THE VIETNAM WAR” – OMG!! ...

As we celebrate Earth Day, let’s preserve Little Beaver Creek

To the editor: No matter what any of us are going through right now because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is comforting to know that just about anywhere across Ohio we can still get outside and enjoy this beautiful time of year. It is a time of renewal for most of us spiritually, as well as a renewal of life itself in our natural world. This time of year I always reflect on Earth Day and what it means. On April 22 we will be celebrating an important milestone, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans — 10 percent of the U.S. population at that time ...

Thank you for supporting the Fleming House

To the editor: On Saturday, March 7 the Fleming House of Family Recovery Center in Lisbon hosted a spaghetti dinner fundraiser. The event was to assist in raising funds to benefit the women and children who reside in the housing units. Overall, the fundraiser was extremely successful, not only because of the funds raised, but the amount of community involvement and support was quite heart-warming. We would like to personally thank all of the community members who played a part in making this event a successful one. Especially our local vendors for providing food, supplies and ...

Michael Bloomberg’s defeat

To the editor:  Imagine the bitter disappointment Mike Bloomberg must now be experiencing after his dismal performance in the Super Tuesday primaries. Except for the American Samoa caucus, he did not see a single first-place outcome. During his brief campaign, this Democrat spent enough to buy everybody in the USA a lunch. Did you get one? "Mini-Mike," as Donald Trump calls him, rebutted his detractor by claiming the true size of a man is measured from his neck up. In other words, how much brainpower is stuffed in that head. Bloomberg is certainly not without smarts. As one of the ...

Government-controlled health systems not the solution

To the editor: As the 2020 election season ramps up, health care has been front and center. While some presidential candidates argue over whether "Medicare for All" or "the public option" is the better proposal, in reality, either of these government-controlled systems would be detrimental to Ohioans, especially those of us who live in rural communities. Under a new government-run health insurance system, middle-class Ohioans would face higher taxes, longer wait times and even a lower quality of care. These negative consequences would be felt even harder by Ohioans in rural ...

BDC executive director offers response

To the editor: The Business Development of the Northern Panhandle, BDC, has worked with county, state and federal officials to secure over $1 million in grant funding to environmentally clean up the TS&T property in Chester which had been neglected and abandoned for nearly 30 years. Without this effort by the BDC and our partners, the TS&T site would still be an economic and environmental detriment to the city of Chester. The BDC also partnered with the West Virginia Economic Development Authority, WVEDA, to finance and construct a building on the TS&T site as a way of attracting new ...
