Schools preventing obesity

Dear Editor: In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). School is a common location at which children spend an average of 6-7 hours a day at, which is a majority part of their hours while awake. Thus, school is one primary setting that could be ideal for preventing obesity. Without a strong contribution from schools, we are not likely to reverse the obesity epidemic. Although schools cannot completely solve the epidemic, without them being strongly involved it is unlikely for ...

School security

Dear Editor: A plethora of issues are being played out with bumper sticker venues that encourages willful ignorance and intellectual dishonesty. Two of these “bumper stickers” are of national concern while the third is a local issue. The first national bumper sticker is “gun control.” It’s the lazy mans heartstrings pulling, use the children, and involve big government agenda that erodes guaranteed rights. There ain’t nothin’ easier than convincing a bunch of bureaucrats to start confiscating private property, outlawing its possession, and making an outlaw of a ...

Helpful employees

Dear Editor: I know people hate paying taxes or even going to the tax office to file but I don’t think people appreciate and understand how lucky they are when dealing with the East Liverpool Tax Department. I have always had wonderful service and both ladies work very hard explaining the rules and the ins and out of the tax department. I just went this Tuesday to file my city taxes and as always they’re open right on time with a very friendly face. I only go once a year, but thanks to those lovely and helpful ladies it’s a wonderful experience. They really make a bad ...

Student volunteers

Dear Editor: I’m writing to congratulate and commend the team of student volunteers for the superb job they did at last weekend’s Music and Art at Oak Glen festival. It was the fourth year for the festival, but first for me as a vendor, and I’m sure I’ll be back next year. It’s a great event, and brings an eclectic mix of culture and arts to the Tri-State Area. A capable team of student volunteers was assigned to help the vendors. Every one of the them was polite, well-spoken, friendly, and helpful. They answered questions, hauled our boxes, helped with setup, delivered our ...

A wonderful life

Dear Editor: Why I will continue to walk with God ... He is the source and the sustainer of life. The power of God unto eternal life through Christ Jesus the Son of God. Not anything we have done or can do. Christ done it all at Calvary and it is a wonderful life, that can be yours. Pray, Lord I am sorry for things I’ve done to offend you and ask you to forgive me and come into my heart as my Lord and Savior. And right now I believe I am saved. Donald Shaw East Liverpool

Protect teen health, safety, learning

Dear Editor: Teen substance abuse, car crashes, obesity, low graduation rates, and school-based violence — chronic sleep deficiency increases risk for every one of these national concerns. Because too-early middle and high school start times make adolescents especially vulnerable to sleep loss and disruption, the nonprofit Start School Later is urging everyone to take action to protect teen sleep, health, safety, and learning during National Sleep Awareness Week, March 11-17. “Regardless of who you are, there is something you can do,” states Start School Later Communications ...
