Army veteran: War now is against COVID-19

To the editor: I am a very old Army veteran who didn’t say I had a foot bone spur — as Trump did — to not to serve his country. I am sure all of our brave servicemen who have fought in many wars to defend our country would all say I’d gladly wear a mask and do safe-distancing. We are in war now against COVID-19. The only weapons we have now are masks and safe-distancing. Do this together and we could save many lives. To me, people who don’t do this are saboteurs and egotists. Only they feel they are the only one important in their little world. When you see a ...

Scout recommends Beaver Creek Center

To the editor: My name is Wesley Wedgewood. I am a member of Boy Scout Troop 2012, East Liverpool. I am working on a “Communication Merit Badge.” Writing to the editor of a newspaper is part of the requirements to earning the badge. Below are my thoughts. Saturday Aug. 22, I visited the “Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center.” The center contains many attractions including live animal displays and mounted animal displays. Snakes, turtles and also a contained indoor bee hive are some of the living exhibits I saw while there. There are many rooms filled with ...

Hancock County’s million dollar mistake

To the editor: In 2016, the Hancock County Commission offered a nonprofit that had operated their county animal shelter $88,000 from the county’s “general account” to operate the shelter for fiscal year 2017. Combined with the $100,000 annual Animal Shelter Excess Levy, the nonprofit would receive $188,000 in taxpayer funds to operate the shelter. The nonprofit agreed. However, the commissioners also mandated changes to the shelter operation contract so detrimental to the welfare of the animals, the nonprofit would not sign the modified contract. The result was the ...

Expressing thoughts on loss of state funding

To the editor: My name is Emily Wright. I am 36 and have been a resident of Columbiana County for nearly a decade. Much of my life has been spent in the Ohio Valley. I lived seven years in East Liverpool alone. I am writing you today as a resident of this county and the Secretary of the Columbiana County Young Democrats. To say I am surprised would be a lie. But to say I am ready for change would be the truth. In early 2018, I sat in the office of former Mayor Ryan Stovall. I was there as a campaign representative of an Ohio gubernatorial candidate. We were ...

Former mayor express concerns

To the editor: I now live near Huachuca City, Ariz. but I remain deeply concerned about the welfare of New Cumberland, West Virginia the town I was privileged to be mayor of for four years. This little town was described by the “Business Development of the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia" as the gateway to development of the Northern Panhandle. All important traffic moves through this town. It moves over a roadway that has been in peril for many, many years. Beginning at the north end of town, WV Rt. 2 travels south straight through town to the single traffic light where ...

Thank you to the Chester VFW Post 6450, Bob Milby Post

To the editor: Locust Hill Cemetery wishes to thank the Chester VFW Post 6450, Bob Milby Post for their recent donation of a new Kubota zero-turn mower. The generous spirit of the leadership and members of the VFW is beyond measure. This donation will be a great improvement for the cemetery. Without this generous donation, this mower purchase would not have been possible. A big thank you also to Phil’s Sales and Service in Columbiana, OH for their excellent sales staff for getting a great price for the mower. The kindness and community spirit from everyone involved in this donation ...
