Provide gift of life, loving home

Dear Editor: Six months ago, County Commissioners and designated employees seized operation of the Hancock County Animal Shelter. Before that, the Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation successfully managed the shelter for nearly 20 years, and during its tenure it gained the confidence and gratitude of Hancock County — evident by the generous levies passed in favor of the animals and a humane operation. As HCASF evolved over the years, our mission was not just to operate a shelter, but to provide a safe place where animals would receive everything from basic physical needs to the ...

CMHA backs the blue

Dear Editor: The Columbiana Metropolitan Housing Authority would like to commend the East Liverpool Police Department and Chief John Lane for its outstanding service to the community in general and Fawcett Apartments in particular. Recently, a disturbed individual threatened the safety of our high-rise residents — and were it not for the bravery and quick action of our police officers, a tragedy would have resulted. We are deeply appreciative of the service and protection Chief Lane and the ELPD provide and wanted to use this forum to express our gratitude. The residents of this ...

St. Clair Twp. trustees did the right thing

Dear Editor: Our St. Clair Township trustees recently had to make a difficult and quite expensive decision to purchase two new trucks and associated equipment for the welfare of our residents and to provide safe and quality roads for everyone in particular during the winter season. It is/was not feasible to continue throwing money into repairing old equipment. I applaud this decision and the financing option that was selected with paying approximately $60,000 a year over a five-year term which comes to around $300,000. We are fortunate to have forward-thinking, progressive and ...

Holiday spirit

Dear Editor: The holiday season is well underway with the parades, light-ups and sales events seemingly attracting larger numbers this year. As a long-time member of the EL area alumni band, I thought both Chester and EL parades played to bigger and more appreciative audiences. Perhaps one of the more extensive lighted displays can be seen every evening at 3285 St. Clair Ave. As a neighbor of the Beresfords, I have seen the growth each year. The time, effort, and expense invested by Mrs. Beresford would not come to mind of the casual observers. So, thank you JoAnne for your present ...

Let’s stop forgetting

Dear Editor: While out in the Calcutta area on Dec. 7, I was made aware that some businesses still fail to observe the proper way our flag is to be flown on days on national observance. We should know and never forget 12-7-1941, the day our country was attacked by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. This day is set aside to honor this day in history and to remember the lives lost because of this attack, and our observance is shown by flying our flag at half staff. What amazed me was the VA Clinic failed to show the respect to those who perished that day by properly flying our ...

Similarities

Dear Editor: The similarities of the instant background check that is required when buying a firearm and the presidential election recount effort is striking. First, the background check conducted by the National Instant Criminal Background System (NICS) isn’t instant for a large percentage of the American population. You can be in a delayed status when buying a firearm if your name is the same as a known felon. The dealer, a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) calls NICS so the purchaser is either “cleared,” “delayed” or “denied” before a firearm transfer can be ...
