Dear Editor: Over a year ago, the Hancock County Commission assumed management of the animal shelter. At that time, they stated they would run the shelter better than the prior management and would consult with veterinarians regarding animal care. Currently, more animals died at the shelter in one month than died in the last year under prior management. If you don’t care about animals but want to relate this to money, this is how the business venture is measuring up. Per state code, the animals are to be spayed or neutered prior to release from the shelter. This isn’t done free ...

Sending thanks

Dear Editor: I would like to thank Beaver Local Schools for the Veterans Day program on Nov. 10. The breakfast was good and as a veteran, I felt a lot of love and respect from the Beaver Local faculty, staff, and students. The choir, bands, speakers, elementary program, placemats, rocks, soldiers, dog tags and posters were all appreciated. The only damper to the day was the fact that veteran grandchildren were not present to observe the program with the veterans after they all put so much into making the program so memorable. It’s not about the flag

Dear Editor: Can you please tell me what our American flag has to do with police brutality? I know police brutality is terrible and it has to be stopped, but why take it out on our flag? I had 10 members of my immediate family serve to protect our flag. I had a brother killed, a son wounded, and I have a grandson, Nathan Miller, serving in the Navy right now. If one has to protest, go to the authorities and leave our precious flag out of it. God Bless America. Bonnie Miller Calcutta

Gift to the taxpayers?

Dear Editor: On July 1, 2016, the Hancock County Commission assumed responsibility for operating the county animal shelter. The commissioners refused to negotiate a new contract with a nonprofit which had been operating the animal shelter for over 20 years. The nonprofit had also raised 90 percent of the approximate half-million dollars for construction and improvements to the current facility. When the commissioners assumed management of the shelter, there was an approximate $365,000 balance in the Animal Shelter Excess Levy account. Because the previous levies had identified the ...

‘Drive-by Media’

Dear Editor: Situations the “Drive-by Media” push to be the nation’s new concensus is the rape of all things once held sacred. Along that line is their insatiable desire to have the last word. The latest example is the outrageous attack by a congresswomen, for her own political gain, diminishing the ultimate sacrifice of a soldier. Should not the POTUS defend the integrity of a very private and personal phone call to a grieving widow? Or does a media-backed congresswomen, who eavesdropped then distorts the conversation, get the last word. Enter Sen. Sherrod Brown, the ...

We need to be cleaner

Dear Editor: Our beautiful Ohio Valley has a litter problem. I think it can be fixed pretty quickly and somewhat easily and cheaply. It will take many people, groups and organizations to all pitch in and not only clean up a bit, but more importantly to stop the litter from happening in the first place. This is where you come in. I propose that local television stations and print media do an anti-litter blitz. Maybe for years if needed. One example ... a PSA (Public Service Announcement) contest of sorts. Involve kids of all ages at all area schools. Have them create short little ...
