Praise for city administrators for being proactive

To the editor: I have been following the efforts of the city of East Liverpool's cdministration to rid the city of blighted and uninhabitable properties and they should be applauded for their initiative. City Housing Inspector Bob Smith has "stepped up to the plate" and is spearheading this program with the same enthusiasm, professionalism, compassion and devotion he displayed as a city firefighter for almost three decades. Bob certainly has a rewarding job in many ways as he tries to rid the city of properties that cause health problems, public safety, fire hazards and absolutely ...

Some information about MSSA

To the editor: I think a lot of individuals are unaware about the MSSA Super Walk coming up on Saturday, Sept. 28, and a lot more people uninformed about who the MSSA is. MSSA stands for Multiple Sclerosis Services Agency. We are a 501(c)3 NON-PROFIT agency, providing services to those individuals living with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. We are NOT affiliated with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Every penny we raise here, stays here, in the tri-county area! Everyone at the agency is a volunteer, where no one is paid for their time. ...

Unhappy with the Wellsville state report card “D”

To the editor: I had the pleasure of seeing the new Wellsville football/track facility recently. It is a special place and worth the trip to see. I also recently saw in the newspaper the lousy report card the school district received. Not good. Then I read today (Sept 17) the lip service the taxpayers are getting about the report card. Sounds like one of the students who comes home and a parent challenges the student about a "D" for the second time in a row and he/she says "but this one was a good D". No—nonsense is what that is. I believe $1 million-plus sure could have been ...

JOBS Act would provide shorter-term assistance

To the editor: Thank you, Senator Portman, for authoring bipartisan legislation called the JOBS Act. The JOBS Act would allow low-income students to use Pell Grants for shorter-term training programs. Community colleges around the country have made this legislation their number one priority, because companies like Encino Energy are working with local businesses, putting together training programs that are needed to help fill in-demand jobs, such as natural gas related employment. Our company alone supports upwards of 4,000 jobs from hundreds of local contractors each year. Most ...

Are you willing to lose the United State Postal Service?

To the editor: I am writing because the United States Postal Service is in jeopardy. Since 2006, our US Postal Service has been held back by a Congressionally mandated requirement to pre-fund its retirees’ healthcare benefits 70 years into the future—an obligation placed on virtually no other private or public-sector organization in America. Essentially, this means that the Postal Service faces an unfair disadvantage and loses money every year. The USPS would have recorded surpluses of nearly $4 billion in the last six years if not for the mandate. On April 29, 2019, a bill ...

October is National Domestic Violence Month

To the editor: October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time of unity to connect victims, advocates, and allies across the country. Domestic violence affects millions, both women and men, of every race, religion, culture and status. It’s not just punches and black eyes — it’s yelling, humiliation, stalking, manipulation, coercion, threats and isolation. It’s stealing a paycheck, keeping tabs online, non-stop texting, constant use the silent treatment, or calling someone stupid so often they believe it. Since the Violence Against Women Act passed in 1994, ...
