Encourages support of county parks levy

To the editor: The County Park District Board of Commissioners has placed a .35 mill levy on the November 8th ballot. This is a new tax which is needed for the operation and maintenance of County Parks. It will cost the homeowner of a home valued at $100,000 approximately $12.25 per year. The County Park District was created by the County Commissioners in 1974. The District received its first property, Scenic Vista Park, in 1976. Passage of levy essential to future of county parks

To the editor: When county residents vote on November 8 they will see a new tax levy for operation and maintenance of the Columbiana County Park District. The County Park District consists of Scenic Vista Park in Center Township, Hellbender Bluff Park in Madison Township and the Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail which runs from Washingtonville to Lisbon. To the editor: Did you know the Columbiana County Park District owns and operates Scenic Vista Park in Center township, Hellbender Park in Madison township and 12 miles of the Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail? All of this is done with three part-time employees and volunteers and a five-member Park Board, all of whom are volunteers.  Did you know that the park district’s only guaranteed revenue is $15,000 from Local Government Funds distributed through the County Commissioners’ Office? Do you agree with the Hancock County Commission’s actions?

To the editor: In June 2016, the Hancock County Commission would not renew the standard animal shelter operation contract with a nonprofit that had operated the shelter for twenty years. The nonprofit had accumulated over $300,000 in Animal Shelter Excess Levy funds from the 2008 and 2012 Animal Shelter Excess levies. Both levies had language stating the funds were being raised to provide financial support for the nonprofit, not the commission. Unhappy with vendor at Columbiana Street Fair

To the editor: I was deeply upset, and quite disappointed to see a bumper sticker for sale by a vendor at the Columbiana Street Fair with a vulgarity toward President Biden. The Columbiana Street Fair is a treasured community tradition enjoyed by families from far and wide. It saddens me to see such vulgarity on display for everyone to see, from young children to their grandmothers, walking the midway.
