Columbiana County Common Pleas

Justin E. Crowl, 24, U.S. Route 30, Kensington, who had sent a letter to the court filed on Oct. 12, asking to be allowed to withdraw his plea, was denied in that request by Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam. Crowl was sentenced last week to four years in prison with credit for 65 days served. Crowl had previously pleaded guilty in May to illegal manufacture of drugs, illegal assembly or possession of the chemicals for the manufacture of drugs and possession of drugs.

Crowl was one of three people charged after members of the Columbiana County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at the trailer where he was living on Oct. 7, 2015. Items found there included two one-pot meth labs, an acid gas generator, meth oil, batteries with the lithium removed, hydrogen peroxide and several other items commonly used in the manufacture of meth. A child was also reportedly present in home the night before and day of the search warrant being executed.

A former corrections officer at the Columbiana County Jail, Steven M. Hamilton, 27, Clarks Mill Road, Hammondsville, pleaded guilty to illegal conveyance of drugs onto the grounds of a detention facility. Hamilton had both marijuana and oxycodone in a Burger King bag, which he took into the county jail on March 11 in exchange for $50.  He is facing up to three years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Sentencing is set for Jan. 6.

Joseph M. Green, 23, Knox School Road, Minerva, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft. He requested immediate sentencing and was sentenced to three years in prison consecutive to a term he is serving from a Carroll County case. Green and a co-defendant broke into the home of Bryan and Becky Holmes, Woodsdale Road, Hanoverton, on Dec. 31, 2015, stealing jewelry, tools, electronics and a Glock model 22 40-caliber pistol, as well as other items valued at about $10,000.

Wendall S. Beatty Jr., 28, Dresden Avenue, East Liverpool, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, failure to verify residence address and failure to notify the sheriff of a change of address. On Oct. 20, 2015, Beatty broke into the Trinity Presbyterian Church on Maine Boulevard, East Liverpool, to commit a theft. Sentencing is set for Jan. 5 when he faces up to four years in prison and a $12,500 fine.

Dashaun J. Coles, 20, Danbury, Wellsville, stipulated to probable cause he had violated his probation from a 2014 receiving stolen property case. He was placed back onto community control with the addition of spending up to six months at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center in Wintersville.

Ryan M. Thompson, 34, last known address South Lincoln Avenue, Salem, was sentenced to three years for possession of drugs and felonious assault. Additionally, Thompson’s license was suspended for six months. Thompson assaulted Travis Lowther near Fernangal’s Tavern in Salem on Oct. 2, 2015, causing Lowther to suffer lacerations to the chin, right eyebrow, bottom lip and back of the scalp, extensive facial soft tissue and a slightly displaced fracture of the left posterior tracheal cartilage. In December 2014, Thompson had less than .10 gram of cocaine in his home.

Jason A. Hurst, 39, Dutchtown School Road, Rogers, was placed on four years probation for failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer. On Nov. 6, 2015, Hurst drove a 1985 Ford F-150 to flee from police, leaving the scene of a domestic violence act by striking the door of a sheriff deputy’s cruiser, leading deputies on a high speed chase and then losing control flipping the pickup on a curve.

Kenneth D. Stoffer, 32, Maple Avenue, Wellsville, pleaded guilty in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court to improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, obstructing official business and driving under suspension. Sentencing is set for Dec. 23 when he faces up to two years and 90 days incarceration and $6,750 in fines. On July 4, Stoffer allegedly fled from Wellsville police and had a loaded firearm in the vehicle.

Anthony J. Cleveland, 25, Youngstown, pleaded guilty to trafficking in drugs and was sentenced immediately to 10 months in prison with his license suspended for 12 months. The sentence will be served concurrently with the sentence he is serving from a Mahoning County case. Cleveland sold about 2.98 grams of cocaine to a confidential informant in exchange for $400 to a confidential informant.

Timothy L. Kampfer, 32, state Route 558, Leetonia, was found to have violated the terms of his intervention treatment plan. The plan was dishonorably terminated and he was placed on regular probation with his license suspended for six months for a possession of drugs conviction for cocaine he had in 2014.

David W. Gamble, 21, Park Avenue, East Palestine, stipulated to violating his community control and sentenced to nine months in prison for his receiving stolen property conviction. He was credited with 12 days already served. In May 2013, Gamble had a EZ-GO golf card belonging to the East Palestine Country Club.

Clifford W. McFarland, 35, state Route 7, Lisbon, was found to have violated the terms of his intervention treatment plan and had the plan dishonorably terminated. He was placed on regular community control, ordered to attend the Eastern Ohio Correction Center for six months and had his license suspended for six months. McFarland had been in the intervention plan for charges of possession of drugs and possession of drug abuse instruments, charges which stemmed from June 2014 when he was found incoherent inside a vehicle near the Lisbon pool with heroin and a syringe.

Leah E. Janci, 26, Walnut Street, Leetonia, stipulated to violating the terms of her probation and her probation was dishonorably terminated. Janci had been previously convicted of trafficking in drugs for selling marijuana early in 2010.

Mark A. Jones, 44, Erie Street, East Liverpool, stipulated to violating his intervention treatment plan and had it dishonorably terminated. He was placed on regular community control and had his license suspended for six months for a possession of drugs charge from February 2014 when he had cocaine and marijuana.
