Letters To The Editor

Racism and independence

Dear Editor:Racism is an age old disturbance in the United States that dates back to when this country was founded. The public is exposed to it through violent protests and rallies that occur almost every other day. It is a mainstream controversial topic that has surfaced everywhere. It plays a major role in every American's lives and it seems that nothing can be done to cease its existence. Although the concept is a baffling subject, people are encouraged to think freely about the matter on an independent basis. In Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead," the theme of independence centers around ...

Let’s be first-handers

Dear Editor:In "The Fountainhead," Ayn Rand, suggests that second-handers negatively impact society. Second-handers are freeloaders, who build their success off the achievements of others. Howard Roark, one of the main characters, states, "the second-handers source of action is scattered in every other living person. It's everywhere, and nowhere and you can't reason with him." People who do not acquire their own accomplishments tend to stop trying. They do not put in work, becoming sloppy. When work becomes careless, society suffers, causing loss of jobs, weak buildings, and a false ...

Drugs vs. ‘The Fountainhead’

Dear Editor:How do we fix the drug problem situation in America? To be honest, I don't if anyone really knows how to fix it, but a book called "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand can help us by continuing to raise awareness and keeping conversations going in order to find answers.Ayn Rand's philosophy can drive change through her perspective on the world and how people should really think and live. One of the characters in "The Fountainhead" is named Howard Roark. Roark is a first-hander, which is someone who is an independent thinker and faces nature directly. Howard doesn't take the ...

Using independence to fight racism

Dear Editor:Racism is a major issue in today's society. It stems from beliefs erected long ago by closed-minded thinkers. People are not born racist. Racism is an idea that is spread by the willingness of people in our society to accept the beliefs of others. This is called dependence. The reason that racism continues to exist today is the conformity and dependence that has plagued our society. These are two things that Ayn Rand, author of "The Fountainhead," protests. Instead, Rand promotes independence: the reliance on one's own thinking for judgment. This characteristic is best ...

Memories live on

Dear Editor:Fifteen years is a long time and yet it seems to have passed in a blink of an eye! I still remember the events of 9-11-01 - everything. Where I was. What I was doing. And my reaction - the reaction of the whole world. When you lose someone - be it a wife, a husband, a mother, a father, a sister or brother - their memory fades, but for some reason the death of a child is different. It is not as if you stop loving your wife or husband or other children - each child is special in their own way and each has a lace in your heart that when they die, it is as though that place has ...

Child’s rights need protected

Dear Editor:I am writing as a concerned citizen of East Liverpool. I just read a post that was shared to the public by The City of East Liverpool's Facebook page. In that post are photos of a couple passed out in their vehicle, along with an incident report showing they had been arrested for public intoxication and treated for an overdose while there was a minor child in the vehicle. My concern is that (city officials) posted on social media a photograph of this innocent 4-year old child. While I agree this was an unfortunate incident, I do not believe it is ethical or legal for them to ...
