Managed TNR program works

Dear Editor: The management of free roaming, stray, and feral cats is a serious issue facing our communities. On one hand, there are those people who love and care for these cats; on the other are those who hate the cats and want them eliminated. No matter which side of this issue you are on, there is common ground — each side wants the cats managed. The consensus is that TNR — Trap, Neuter, Return — is the most humane and the most effective method to achieve this goal. A managed Trap-Neuter-Return program with a set feeding area and schedule discourages roaming. Spaying and ...

‘Shop with a Cop’ seeks donations

Dear Editor: The act of giving comes from the heart and touches so many. As the holiday season approaches, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Association respectfully asks for participation in the 28th annual Shop with a Cop Program with an in-kind monetary donation. Through contributions we can reach our goal that every child in Hancock County will receive a Merry Christmas filled with joy. We are proud to share that last year, more than 600 children participated in the program with more than 7500 children being served to date. It has been because of the investment and active ...

Parents and the election

Dear Editor: In regard to the letter concerning Halloween, I’d be more worried about what my child was watching on TV or the internet than I would be about them dressing up and going out trick-or-treating. The problem is not the children, it is what their parents are allowing them to be taught in schools and what the parents have given up — their parenting duty. You make the decisions that will shape their morals and character. Stop letting the government do what you should be doing and do it without any excuses. There is an election on Nov. 8. Are you prepared to do ...

The pain of change

Dear Editor: Anything that takes us from our usual routine tends to make most people a little uncomfortable until a new routine becomes everyday normal. I understand the pain of change, but I also realize the necessity of change when circumstances warrant. Perhaps this explains the incredible emergence of Donald Trump as a presidential candidate. Now with that said, let’s discuss the pain of change as it pertains to Hancock County. This comes from the eyes of someone who moved here by choice 14 years ago from the deserts of Arizona to the hills of West Virginia. I have spent ...

In need of apology

Dear Editor: The Democrat candidate for state Representative, John Dyce, recently called for state Rep. Tim Ginter to denounce comments made by Donald Trump. I am and have always been a registered Democrat, and I am calling for Mr. Dyce to apologize to me and my family members who are also registered Democrats for giving us the likes of Hillary Clinton as a nominee. She is the most criminal-minded, self-serving and corrupt individual that has ever been in public office. This is the reason why I, along with everyone I know, has jumped that ship and got on the Trump ...

Get this under control

Dear Editor: The article in the paper on Monday, Oct. 10, describing the three companies that shipped a total of 459.4 million pain pills to West Virginia over a 6-year period was alarming. That is over 41 pain pills a year for every man, woman, and child in West Virginia. I’m wondering what the justification is for suing the drug companies though? Who ordered these pills? What pharmacies received them? What doctors prescribed them? Why did it take six years for someone in government to discover this? It seems like there is a lot of blame to go around here. This is an ...
