Support appreciated

Dear Editor, Randy and I would like to thank all of you who have reached out to us with concern, with compassion and with love during our son Jason Mitchell’s illness. We could only watch and pray as Jason walked out the path that he was on. He fought with determination for the past two years. He wanted to be here for his wife and daughters. The time came when he just could not fight any longer. He said that he just wanted to “go home.” Within 10 days that is exactly what he did. Now, grief and tears of sorrow seem to be our daily companions, yet there is a small light of ...

Entitlement

Dear Editor: I read a Letter to the Editor stating and talking about what they called “entitlement.” Since when has Social Security or Medicare been an “entitlement?” Many, if not all, older people worked 30-40 years to receive this money. The promise was if you work and pay into this program, when you retire, you will get an income to help you. You notice I use the words “work” and “pay into the program” as many people are disabled and need the healthcare and the assistance from the government who are unable to work. Healthy start times needed

Dear Editor: Schopenhauer’s three stages of truth: “All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” At this point of time, the Hancock County Board of Education is strongly anchored at first stage. While national health organizations such as the American Medical Association (AMA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have strongly advocated for sleep health among adolescents, back in 2014 the Hancock County Board of ...

Pitch in, clean up

Dear Editor: I would like to address our terrible litter situation in Hancock County, W.Va. I know the problem is all over this Ohio Valley, but I live here and am working to help fix this issue locally. This litter is a problem. It costs all of us time, money, energy and misery. It is only a slight misery perhaps, but day after day it seemingly is all over the place. All the litter and all the garbage is not good for us as a people or as a community. We can fix it. We will need to approach it from many, many angles: schools, kids, education, creating local ordinances, as well as ...
