Roach, Ruberto run with the top of the pack

East Liverpool’s Maddox Roach runs in the Suburban League Cross Country Championships on Tuesday at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
CANFIELD — East Liverpool senior Maddox Roach finished second and Beaver Local senior Hannah Ruberto was third at the Suburban League Cross Country Championships on Tuesday.
Roach opened up an early lead before being passed by McDonald senior Joey Cappuzzello in the second half of the race at the dry Canfield Fairgrounds.
Cappuzello topped the 208-runner boys field by completing the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 20.4 seconds, followed by Roach in 16:30.3. Roach has beaten Cappuzzello once before.
East Liverpool senior Brody Vulgamore finished 10th, Beaver Local junior Luke Warrick 15th and Columbiana sophomore Eric Hepner 22nd.
Ruberto was third out of 152 girls runners in 20:54.3.
McDonald sophomore Noami Sheesley ran away with the individual title a second straight season in 19:35.7, which was 68 seconds ahead of the field.
Southern junior Mara Miller was 18th and Columbiana sophomore Sidney Schlueter 19th.
Just like last year, Heartland Christian senior Rebecca Geiss — the Suburban League champion and Ohio Division III state champion as a sophomore — was the pacesetter for sophomore teammate Gabriella McDowell. They finished 44th and 45th, respectively.
Geiss’ next race will be at the Columbiana County Meet in Columbiana on Tuesday where she will be trying to win the county title for a fourth year in a row.
Howland won the Suburban League boys team title, while the McDonald girls had four of the top eight runners to easily capture their second straight team title.
Beaver Local topped area teams by placing fourth in the boys standings and sixth in the girls.
