Winter comes early to Gas Valley

Life shifted into a different, slower gear last Tuesday morning as winter, real winter (you remember winter, don’t you?) announced itself a little early, transforming Gas Valley overnight with five inches of wet, heavy snow. There had been no wind. The sticky snow stacked itself thin on every tree branch and twig. Our car and trucks sported big white hats. The clutter of tires, tools and trash in front of the garage were anonymous white bumps. The yuccas were frozen white explosions; the forsythia, ocean waves stopped in mid-crest. Even the weeds and briars pretended elegance, ...

DeWine’s veto was needed for bill regarding working minors

Thank goodness common sense prevailed in Columbus last week, as Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed a bill that would have allowed Ohio children ages 14 and 15 to work until 9 p.m. year-round. State Sen. Tim Schaffer, R-Lancaster, had introduced both Senate Bill 50 to alter allowable work hours for minors and Senate Concurrent Resolution 3, which asked Congress to change the Fair Labor Standards Act to accommodate Ohio lawmakers’ desire to let 14- and 15-year-olds work longer. Time should not diminish the impact of Dec. 7, 1941

It was the most profound and cowardly sneak attack in the history of man. At exactly 7:55 a.m., on Dec. 7, 1941, the United States was suddenly plunged into a great conflict that would become World War II. The Imperial Japanese Navy struck at Pearl Harbor. And struck hard. The United States’ Pacific Fleet was ravaged. The Japanese sank four battleships, three cruisers and three destroyers. Destroyed were 188 American aircraft. Wounded were 1,282 service personnel. The American death total numbered 2,402. What took the Japanese mere minutes to do on a beautiful Hawaiian Sunday morning ...

Trump needs to be REMOVED

To the editor: Call me radical, but when the President of the United States, the leader of our nation and a symbol of democracy, calls for Democratic lawmakers to be killed, it is imperative that he be REMOVED from office. Such incendiary rhetoric not only undermines the fundamental principles of our democracy but also poses a severe threat to the safety and well-being of elected officials who serve to represent the people. History has shown us the devastating consequences of political violence, as seen in events like the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the tragic ...
