Council changes?

Dear Editor:I have been having thoughts recently about local government in East Liverpool. (Ever since our council raised its pay from $200 to $600 per month some time back.)Over the years, all the city departments have been reduced in size, due to a decreased tax base and shrinking population. The leaders, both council and administration, say the city must do more with less - less of everything but them.Every department has fewer people than it did in past years, but we still have seven members of council, and all the other elected officers, drawing salaries. Dear Editor:On behalf of the board of trustees, the superintendent and assistant superintendent of Thompson Park, I want to offer thanks to the 896 East Liverpool residents that voted in support of the 2-mill capital improvement levy on March 15. We do not take that support for granted.In the months ahead, the park board will be working diligently to get bids for major projects and pricing equipment. Once all priorities have been set, we hope to put a 5-year improvement plan into effect. Please be aware, however, that the money generated by the levy will not be available for a year or ...

Fault in ourselves

Dear Editor:The state of the elected and those seeking to be elected is indeed pitiful. Many have commented on these individuals positively or negatively based upon an ideological bent. And this is exactly what those seeking and holding office want. They want to appeal to a base level instinct. ‘Ain’t broke’

Dear Editor:There is an old saying that fits the city's Board of Public Utilities: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."East Liverpool City Council has a full plate now, so it does not need to take on more than it can chew with everything currently planned and pending.Council needs to be concerned with what could happen by October if revenue does not increase. Newlin name only on Route 7

Dear Editor:I'm writing in regard to of a piece in the paper about a section of state Route 7 being renamed.First of all, years ago, that same section of Route 7 - from Wellsville to East Liverpool - was named Melvin E. Newlin Memorial Highway. Newlin received the congressional medal of honor for the action he took in Vietnam on July 4, 1967. Their position was overrun by the enemy. After the enemy wounded him severely, he turned his m-60 machine gun around and continued to fire on the enemy killing many of them and saving American lives.
