Can we afford Commission?

Dear Editor:Anyone who attends a Hancock County Commission meeting or views a video replay of one notices the lack of respect the commissioners have for the public. The commissioners refuse to answer questions publicly and allow only three minutes for a county resident to present an issue to them. They rudely cut you off at the three minute time duration. However, a fellow elected official or the general manager of Mountaineer is given additional time. At they end of the meeting, they criticize your issue presented without you having the opportunity to respond.Thomas Jefferson said "You ...

What a shame!

Dear Editor:We all wave the flag and listen to patriotic speeches on the Fourth of July while pretending to be good citizens who do our civic duty. We are also the first to complain when some politician does something that we don't like even though we were totally disinterested when the politician was voted into office. This is most apparent in the current race for congressman for the Sixth Congressional District which comprises Columbiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Washington Guernsey, Jackson, Gallia, Carol, Meigs, Harrison, Monroe, Noble, and parts of Athens, Belmont, Mahoning, and Scioto ...

Get back to the basics

Dear Editor:In reference to the article in The Review on Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, about Literacy Collaborative, I would like to add my two cents worth. Why does the district continue to pay taxpayers dollars into programs that are ineffectual at best? Before this Collaborative Program was initiated, a few years back, we had Flip Flipping. Flip Flipping cost the district $2 million and failed. Now, we have Literacy Collaboration, costing $200,000 (That's two hundred thousand dollars for those unable to read digitally.) and it seems to be literally sinking. When Superintendent Taylor says he ...

Actions not words

Dear Editor:Having read the numerous articles on Hancock County Animal Shelter, I would venture to say the problem isn't the shelter as it is the supply of animals. The solution would be to pass legislation that requires all cats and dogs to be licensed in Hancock County. If they are not neutered then a breeder's license would have to be purchased at an additional cost.Set the fee high enough so that it produces enough revenue to hire the necessary people to handle the work load. Fix the fine for unlicensed animals at a high rate to discourage violators. Set the fine for dumping animals ...

PETA sides with commissioners

Dear Editor:At their Aug. 18 regular meeting, Hancock County commissioners quietly accepted, under "correspondence" on the agenda, an unsolicited letter from PETA expressing support for the commission in taking over direct operation of the county animal shelter. They shouldn't have been so quiet.PETA - those animal rights activists who throw paint on women wearing fur coats - is saying the Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation has it wrong and the commission has it right.Wow."So-called 'no-kill' and 'low-kill' policies slam the door on at-risk animals," stated Teresa Chagrin in the ...

Equal play

Dear Editor:I am writing this letter in response to the youth sports programs we have in the area.Year-after-year we see the coach's kids and friends of the coaches (or the friends and family network I call it) constantly get all the playing time in these leagues. There are so many kids that have equal ability or more ability than these starters on the field.Football, for example, used to have the Bill Booth League which demanded that all kids get so many plays a game. I have been on both sides of the fence with my kids ranging from 23- to 10-years old. Coaches have no idea the ...
