Vote to change direction

Dear Editor: Whether you’re for the smoking ban or against it, whether you agree with the animal shelter takeover or not, for one second, let’s forget about those things and look at the two candidates currently running for Hancock County commissioner. The current commissioner has 18 years experience and says he will continue to do things as he has done in the past. He has publicly stated that as long as he is commissioner, the shelter will stay as is, and he has finally found someone to appoint to the health board who will vote the way he wants them to. Are you seeing a theme ...

To God be the glory

Dear Editor: To God be the glory, great things He has done. I was in a department store when I met a lady from our church and she said, “Oh Don, I am glad to see you. I need prayer.” I said I can do that. She asked, “Can you pray for me and don’t know what it is?” I said yes I can, God knows. So I placed my hand on her shoulder and asked God to meet her every need. At that time, there seemed to be warm water flowing over us from head to foot, even to run out over the floor. With my hand still on her shoulder, she said, “Don what was that?” I replied, God ...

Speak up, listen

Dear Editor: John Maxwell said: “Where there is no hope in the future, there is no power in the present.” As we begin Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we turn our thoughts to victims and survivors of violent, abusive relationships. What empowers a victim to take a stand, to take a step toward safety and freedom? It is hope. Hope that the future can be different; hope that they can find help and relief; hope that they can have a better, safer life. Hope brings power. Power to make a phone call, tell a friend, acknowledge the truth about a toxic relationship. Power to rise up ...

Diminished dreams

Dear Editor: In response to the article of the closing of the coal-fired electric power plants, these workers, plus the others from trucking, mining, railroading, and large hauling, probably means well over 1,000 more jobs gone. The bad days of the closings such as Crucible (5,000 jobs) and Weirton Steel (8,000-9,000 jobs) and at least a 1,000 more jobs from truckers, machine shops, etc., are jobs lost forever. Then, the pottery plant that closed, 2,000-3,000 more. The brick yards and clay mine shut down. People left by the thousands from our areas as well as store closings. Our ...

‘Yes’ on State Issue 1

Dear Editor: Starting at 17, I battled addiction for nearly a decade, and during that time I was in and out of county jails and state prisons without getting any real help for my problem. Local police officers, who knew me and my family, wrote me off as a lost cause and said that I would be found dead somewhere. They thought I was going to end up as another statistic. People in prison and jail, like I was, are not getting the proper treatment for their addiction and mental health problems. They are being penalized for having a disease, instead of treated for one. The system is ...
