Use common sense while handling fireworks

To the editor: Phantom Fireworks hopes everyone has an enjoyable and safe family Independence Day celebration.  If you plan to use consumer fireworks, please use them safely.  Phantom’s primary safety tips are:  Use Basic Common Sense  — The fireworks products burn hot & produce fire and sparks when functioning.  People must respect the products for that fact and handle the products with extreme care and caution. Only Adults Should Handle the Fireworks —  (1)  Children should never be permitted to handle fireworks products.  (2)  A designated shooter (a sober, ...

Forget the pinheads, leave electoral college alone

To the editor: Friends, neighbors, and fellow Americans if I might take a moment of your time to remind you of the lessons you learned in school: The articles of our Constitution were hammered out by some of the most brilliant political minds the world has known. Presently, some pea-brained political small fry believe the document which guided us through 200 years of our Republic must be modified to their whims. The founders of our Republic knew the dangers of people at large electing the chief executive. They came up with the idea of the electoral college whereby you would vote ...

Memorial Day message: We will never forget

To the editor: There have been moments in the 38 years of my military career that will forever be etched in my memory. None of them are more memorable than the day in 2012 when I stood on an airport ramp while the flag-draped caskets of three of our fallen Ohio Army National Guard Soldiers were escorted off the airplane. Emotions ranged from anger to sympathy for the three heroes whose lives were cut short while serving their country. The Ohio National Guard has experienced the loss of 15 men since the global war on terrorism began after 9/11. These patriots were fathers, husbands, ...

Heartbroken over reports of cemetery conditions

To the editor: Recent news articles and broadcasts about the conditions at Columbiana County Memorial Cemetery have left me heartbroken. A dear family friend, Lou Bozek, first alerted our family early this week to the lack of care being given to my parents’ gravesites . After reading articles and watching news footage I am devastated. The broken headstone she spoke of in her recent letter belongs to my parents. I live in Texas and am only able to visit my parents graves during infrequent trips “home.” I trusted that the plots that my father sacrificed, scrimped and saved to ...

Little Lena Christine and letting babies live

To the editor: My wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to spend the winter in a warmer climate. The day after we got back to East Liverpool we went to see our great granddaughter. Little Lena Christine was one day old. She had ten toes and ten fingers, knew when she was hungry or needed a diaper changed. She knew her mommy and loved to be held close by those who love her. If you are or have been fortunate enough to be near a newborn baby you know the joy they bring to a family. Don’t allow a politician, a friend, or even a law some state enacted fool you into thinking an ...

Kind words for the late Columbiana County Sheriff Beresford

To the editor: Last week Columbiana County lost one of its foremost citizens, former County Sheriff Robert “Brass” Beresford of Wellsville. Brass loved his God and his family. He served his country as a Marine in both World War II and the Korean War. He was truly a member of “The Greatest Generation.” As such he asked for nothing and for no advantage in return for his service, only for the opportunity to raise his family in freedom and peace. As a lawman, he rose from the rank of city patrolman to county sheriff. He earned every position and along the way, the respect and ...
