David A. Baldwin

1938-2026

SEBRING — David A. Baldwin, 87, of Sebring, formerly of Wellsville, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Crandall Medical Center.

David was born on Dec. 13, 1938, in East Liverpool, the eldest son of the late Allen and Rachael (Hall) Baldwin.

David graduated from Wellsville High School in 1956 and proudly served as a Corporal and trombonist in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1962. He went on to build a distinguished career, working at the former Crucible Steel Mill and MetLife before dedicating nearly two decades to public health as the Columbiana County Health Commissioner for five years and the Medina County Health Commissioner for twelve years.

David was a deeply patriotic soul who loved his country and the men and women who protect it.

In his retirement, he spent his years doing what he loved most: traveling the country alongside his beloved wife. Those who knew David will remember him for his quick wit and rambunctious spirit, a warmth and humor that filled every room he entered and left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Each Christmas, that spirit came alive in his hilarious tradition of reading a rather spirited rendition of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” to his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. This performance was, by all accounts, not quite the version found in print.

A lover of history, David channeled that passion into his cherished collection of antique cars and his proud membership in the Studebaker Foundation. He was deeply rooted in the Wellsville community, having served on the Wellsville Board of Education in the 1980s, held membership in the Wellsville Elks Lodge 1040, and enjoyed time on the greens at the East Liverpool Country Club. David was also a passionate recreational pilot who found great joy in flying, a love he happily shared by helping Honey, Bo, and his grandson, David, all take to the skies. His daughter Gretchen may have been a willing student as well; that is, until a well-timed barrel roll somewhere over Ohio permanently redirected her aviation career.

David is survived by his daughter, Gretchen Baldwin of Wellsville; four grandchildren: Samantha Mayer, Ashley Perry (Daniel Mauch), Daniel Thompson, and David Thompson; and seven great-grandchildren: Jayden, Richie, Jazmin, Jaxon, Donny, Max, and Charlie. He is also lovingly survived by his nieces and nephews, Jordan, Stephanie, Christine, Aaron, Alexis, and Amber, and many great-nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death on April 17, 2016, by his beloved wife of 58 years, Gretchen “Honey” (Nile) Baldwin, whom he married on Dec. 23, 1957. He was also preceded in death by his son, David “Bo” Allen Nile Baldwin; one sister, Carol Hoffman; and four brothers: Frank “Daniel,” Phillip “Butch,” Stephen, and Glenn Baldwin.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Roberts Funeral Home, with Chaplain Gary Rozier of Hospice of the Valley officiating. The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord full military honors prior to the service. The burial will take place at Spring Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Family and friends may visit from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main St., Wellsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in David’s name to the Wellsville Alumni Association Scholarship Committee, PO Box 629, Wellsville, OH 43968.
