Oak Glen Lions Club Scholar of the Month

NEW CUMBERLAND — Allyson Brothers, daughter of Ashvin and Joyce Brothers, is a student in Oak Glen’s graduating class of 2020. She is focused on academics, maintaining straight A’s all throughout her high school career. She is president of the Student Council and Culture Club as well as an active member of the National Honor Society and Oak Glen’s Little Theater. This past summer, she attended the Governor’s Honors Academy where she took courses in mathematics and politics at Marshall University. She also attended leadership workshops such as Youth Leadership Weirton and two consecutive years with the iBelieve Foundation. As a freshman, she played varsity tennis and qualified for states as regional champion for doubles.

She enjoys being an active member of her community. Through her position in the Student Council, she leads fundraisers for nonprofit organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project which aids veterans and active duty service members. She also volunteers as assistant director for the Oak Glen Middle School’s theater and as a staff member during the annual Music and Art Festival.

She is very passionate about the arts. She is an artist and musician as well as an actress. This past December, she played Dorothy Gale in the Oak Glen Little Theater’s production of The Wizard of Oz. She also participated in Story Book Theater, where elementary students had the chance to write creative stories for high school students to perform. She was also recently cast as Betty Rizzo in this spring’s production of Grease. She has been a member of the Sacred Heart Choir for three years. She has also learned to play a variety of instruments such as the piano, saxophone, and ukulele. She was accepted to the Region One Honor Band in 2017 and 2018. She will be performing her original songs at the Music and art Festival as well as displaying her studio artwork. She received second place in the regional art competition in 2019. She also finished in the top 5 at the 2019 WV Poetry Out Loud Competition.

After high school, she plans to attend West Virginia University to study Exercise Physiology. She plans on pursuing a career as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. She is an advocate towards the long term effects of physical health and strength, and has a growing passion to help patients heal their physical conditions and afflictions. She is looking forward to continuing her educational journey at WVU.
