Beaver Local partners with Akron Children’s Mobile Unit

LISBON — Healthcare is being made available to Beaver Local students through a new partnership with the Akron Children’s Mobile Unit.

District Superintendent Eric Lowe shared the new opportunity with the Board of Education during the January board meeting.

Lowe thanked school nurse Kathy Boggs for her work on the new initiative .

“Healthcare will be accessible for high school students on Jan. 28 and middle school and elementary students on Feb. 18,” Lowe said.

According to the Akron Children’s website, the mobile unit offers services like well-child visits, Immunizations, non-emergent acute illness care, developmental screenings, adolescent health care, asthma care, including inhaler and spacer education; lead and hemoglobin screenings, and referrals for specialty care.

The mobile unit is beneficial in that it eliminates the need to remove students from school during school hours for transport a doctor’s office.

In other matters, Director of Special Programs BethAnn Rettos shared that the district hit all indicators on the Special Ed Profile through the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW).

The profile highlights student outcomes and academic growth.

She also shared the district has begun Northwest Evaluation Association Measures Map testing. The online testing measures academic progress in areas of reading, math and science.

She also said the district is focusing on fairness as the pillar of character trait.

Lowe shared that at the recent staff professional development specials teachers reviewed their new learning standards from ODEW, while others reviewed data and metrics that impact the district’s report card, and collaborated to set goals and have data-informed discussions with students about their academic progress.

Lowe also told the board that the purchase of two school buses will bring the fleet to 12 buses that are 2029 or newer.

“The district has 19 busses on the roads daily and of these the oldest would be 2017,” he said.

The board approved purchasing two buses through the DAS state purchasing program at a cost of $132,521.00 per bus.

The board also approved an agreement with the Youngstown State University for the College Credit Plus program for the 2026-27 school year; an amended agreement with the Educational Service Center of Eastern Ohio for the 2025-26 school year; and an agreement with the Counseling Center for the 2025-26 school year.

Also approved were supplemental contracts for Derrick Stickles as head boys track coach and Terry Bowyer as assistant high school track coach.
