NEW CUMBERLAND — More than 50 area youth have spent this week camping in Tomlinson Run State Park as part of a 4-H excursion.

Zach White of the West Virginia Extension (WVU) office in New Cumberland and 24 volunteers oversaw more than 80 campers, ranging in age from 5 to 17 during this summer’s 4-H camp.

Fifty-six students age 9 and older stayed overnight in the park’s group cabins. Twenty-five children ages 5-8, nicknamed Cloverleaves, participated in dayside activities with guardians dropping them off and picking them up daily during the four days.

Daily, campers would shower and prepare for the day’s adventure, which would include breakfast and tribal meetings before their initial class of the day at 10 a.m.

Following completion of their earlier classwork, students enjoyed lunch, completed more tribal obligations before heading down via a Hancock County Schools’ bus to the pool, where they spent the afternoon before dinner and reflecting on the day’s activities before some evening recreation and lights out at 11 p.m.

Most of the classes involved hands-on activities like food preservation, learning to make spa products like sugar scrubs, line dancing, art and drama.

White informed that the WVA Extension will hold its 4-H STEM camp July 25-27 for pre-registered middle and high school-aged students headed to grades 5-12 with activities centering around science, engineering, coding and biology.

Equipped with most of the modern conveniences, Tomlinson Run State Park is perhaps the tri-state area’s nicest public swimming pool. The swimming pool facilities boasts not only a pool ramp for easy access, plenty of space for sunbathers to lay out poolside as well as poolside canopies to provide select areas of shade.
