Negley man faces charges for standoff
LISBON — A Negley man accused of threatening to shoot two EMS workers and in possession of a shotgun Sunday while intoxicated will face a pretrial July 6 in Columbiana County Municipal Court.
John Graham, 61, Southern Street, pleaded not guilty during arraignment Monday to misdemeanors of aggravated menacing and having weapons while intoxicated. He was ordered to have no contact with the two emergency medical service workers and posted bond to secure his release from jail. Bond had been set at $7,500 cash or surety.
According to Sheriff Brian McLaughlin, no one was injured during the incident which included a standoff with deputies, a negotiator and the county Special Response Team. The department was first contacted at 4:42 p.m. Sunday for a suicidal male who said he was going to shoot himself and made threats that if deputies came to the residence, he would shoot himself.
Deputies were called at 5:04 p.m. to respond and prior to their arrival, a Negley EMS crew was waved over to the residence by a third party, with Graham allegedly in possession of a shotgun and refusing to hand it over, saying he would shoot the EMS personnel if they didn’t leave. They left to await deputies.
A deputy made contact with Graham via phone and attempted to have him come to the door without the weapon, but was unsuccessful. He allegedly said he wanted to come out but was too drunk to stand or walk.
SRT personnel made entry into the trailer and found him with the shotgun still underneath him. He was taken into custody and allegedly admitted to being intoxicated and having possession of the firearm.
Sheriffs’ office personnel were on the scene for a few hours, with Graham taken into custody by 7:07 p.m. and the scene cleared at 8:28 p.m.
