The Beavers, playing without injured 6-foot-7 All-Ohioan Owen Hill, dropped a 65-50 decision to South Range. SALEM — Salem athletic director Matt Freeman said the school district was caught off guard when it found out that Carrollton, Minerva and Marlington were leaving the Eastern Buckeye Conference for a new league. Like West Branch, Salem heard rumors of the league’s probable demise a week before the official announcement came on Friday. “It seems like it’s no longer about geography or size of the school,” Freeman said. CLAIRSVILLE — Faced with another championship game against Buckeye 8 Athletic League member Cambridge, Beaver Local could not turn the tables on Saturday as the Bobcats grabbed the OVAC Class 4A championship with a 67-56 win over the Beavers at the ECO Center. STEUBENVILLE — Beaver Local junior Cole Long scored wins in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.20 and 200 individual medley in 2:00.84 to advance on Saturday at the Div. II sectional swim meet at Steubenville Natatorium. He also was a part of Beaver’s 200-yard freestyle relay team which won in 1:36.03 and the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:29.44).
