Little Lena Christine and letting babies live

To the editor: My wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to spend the winter in a warmer climate. The day after we got back to East Liverpool we went to see our great granddaughter. Little Lena Christine was one day old. She had ten toes and ten fingers, knew when she was hungry or needed a diaper changed. She knew her mommy and loved to be held close by those who love her. If you are or have been fortunate enough to be near a newborn baby you know the joy they bring to a family. Don’t allow a politician, a friend, or even a law some state enacted fool you into thinking an ...

Kind words for the late Columbiana County Sheriff Beresford

To the editor: Last week Columbiana County lost one of its foremost citizens, former County Sheriff Robert “Brass” Beresford of Wellsville. Brass loved his God and his family. He served his country as a Marine in both World War II and the Korean War. He was truly a member of “The Greatest Generation.” As such he asked for nothing and for no advantage in return for his service, only for the opportunity to raise his family in freedom and peace. As a lawman, he rose from the rank of city patrolman to county sheriff. He earned every position and along the way, the respect and ...

Pete Buttigieg earned this writer’s respect

To the editor: Physiognomy is the art of judging character from facial features. Everyone does it. Most of the time the gears remain in neutral, but oft-times when encountering a stranger, we size him up. Can I trust this person? Is his nose too long and his chin too weak? How about those beady eyes? Whether this is politically correct, judging a person at first glance is a safeguard, though one can often be wrong in his appraisal: the person you’ve judged as a skunk turns out to be one of the finest individuals you’ve ever met, and vise versa. It takes time to tell. Still it’s ...

Energy supply chain is strong

To the editor: Sometimes we forget about all of the downstream jobs that are created when a company builds a new facility, but Rick Shrum's recent article ("Buzz palpable surrounding Shell cracker in Pa.," April 11) really brought those benefits to light. Not only will the new Shell cracker plant create hundreds of manufacturing jobs, it's already helped boost the region's construction industry. This phenomenon isn't unique to our region. According to the Energy Equipment and Infrastructure Alliance — a group that includes labor unions, construction trades and other groups across ...

Beaver Local BOE president asks for support

To the editor: I am asking for the voters of the Beaver Local School District to please vote “yes” for the renewal levy on May 7. This levy has been in effect since 1994 and will cause no gains to voters’ taxes. The monies are budgeted on a daily basis to purchase items that are used to run the school: technology, maintenance, utilities, resource officer). This renewal levy has nothing to do with the bond issue that paid for the construction of the new school I am a proud member of this community and feel providing the best education is a responsibility that we all can share. ...

Giving thanks to the Community Improvement Corporation

Giving thanks to the Community Improvement Corporation To the editor: May is Historic Preservation Month. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Community Improvement Corporation for agreeing to accept the Thompson Block from the county Land Bank. I also need to commend them for understanding that preservation and restoration of those buildings is important. Last fall, I presented a letter to the CIC. Below are points from that letter: One of our community’s strengths, something that makes East Liverpool unique, is the amount of historic architecture that we have in ...
