POTTERS WIN OPENING MATCH
EAST LIVERPOOL -- East Liverpool’s boys golf team scored a 195-212 win over Edison on Wednesday in the season opener at East Liverpool Country Club.
Kam Engle led the Potters with a 43. Cooper Klein and Donovan Shallcross had 49s while Carstin Suznevich added a 54.
Xander Haught had a 47 for the Wildcats.
East Liverpool is at the Brookfield Invitational on Aug. 5.
MEET THE PENGUINS
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University football fans are invited to “Meet the Penguins” from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Watson & Tressel Training Site (WATTS).
Fans can get autographs, phots and interact with players during the free events.
They can also try on a YSU uniform, kick field goals, time a 40-yard dash, enjoy inflatables and toss footballs around with members of the team and the coaching staff. Pete and Penny the Penguin and members of the YSU spirit squad will be in attendance.
The YSU Bookstore will be selling Penguins merchandise.
Parking will be available in the M-81 Lot.
COLUMBIANA CLAIMS OPENER
COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana girls golf team opened the new season with a 187-196 win over Beaver Local on Wednesday at Valley Golf Club.
For the Clippers, Claire Banner had a 41, Maddie Jackson 42, Victoria Buckingham 48 and Mya Fisk 56.
For the Beavers, McKenzie Ash had a 47, Brenna Jones 48, Mya Anderson 48 and Carlee Crabtree 53.
Columbiana is scheduled to play Southeast today at Salem Hills.
BLUE JACKETS CUT RADIO BROADCASTS
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Blue Jackets cut their longtime radio play-by-play man Bob McElligott on Wednesday as the team said it plans to simulcast its TV broadcast on the radio.
McElligott called Blue Jackets games for 17 years.
OHIO RIVER CATFISH TOURNAMENT
CHESTER, W.Va. -- The next Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club Ohio River catfish tournament is slated for Aug 15. Fishing starts at 7 p.m. Sign up at Chaney’s Sunoco in Chester. All fish must be measured at the Chester City Park Marina. Anyone who registered for July’s canceled tournament may use last month’s entry fee to register or may request a refund. All new registrations are $10 per fisherman.
SPORTMEN CLUB TO MEET
CHESTER, W.Va. -- The Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. New members must put in an application then join at the next meeting upon approval.
WOMEN’S FIREARM CLASS
