BRISSETT TO RAVENS
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) -- Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett is heading from the Arizona Cardinals to the Baltimore Ravens, a person with knowledge of the trade told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Brissett started eight games for Arizona this season but was demoted to third-string quarterback after Gardner Minshew stepped in and led the Cardinals to a 33-30 comeback victory at Dallas.
The Ravens (4-4) desperately needed a quarterback after losing Lamar Jackson to a thumb injury and backup Tyler Huntley to a toe injury.
Jackson needs surgery on his right thumb and is out indefinitely. Huntley reportedly will miss the rest of the season.
Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano will start for the Ravens against Jacksonville (5-2) on Thursday night. Brissett likely would start against the Chargers on Nov. 15.
The 33-year-old Brissett is 23-50 as a starter in 11 seasons with New England, Indianapolis, Miami, Cleveland, Washington and Arizona.
TOP FIVE MATCHUP
(AP) -- No. 1 Miami at No. 4 Notre Dame on Saturday night will be the season’s third matchup of teams in the top five of The Associated Press Top 25. If it’s like the first two, it will be close.
Texas-Ohio State and Ohio State-Indiana were decided by a total of five points, and seven of the last nine regular-season top-five matchups have been one-score games.
The average margin of victory in top-five regular-season games since 2000 is 11.9 points, according to Sportradar, with 25 of the 54 decided by eight points or less and the biggest rout being 44 points (No. 5 Oklahoma 65-21 over No. 2 Texas Tech).
Miami has won all four of its top-five regular-season matchups since 2000 and Notre Dame has lost two of three. The Fighting Irish need this one badly to make the College Football Playoff.
TONEY OUT
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Malachi Toney, the star receiver for top-ranked Miami and a Heisman Trophy candidate, has been scheduled for surgery to address a high ankle sprain and will be sidelined for multiple weeks, a person with knowledge of the matter said Wednesday night.
The initial timeline for Toney’s recovery won’t be known until after the surgery, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
It is a huge blow to the Hurricanes (8-0, No. 1 College Football Playoff), who play a showdown game at No. 4 Notre Dame (7-1, No. 11 CFP) on Saturday night -- and now will do so without one of the nation’s most dynamic players.
The injury is believed to be a high ankle sprain, and it’s not uncommon for athletes with that issue to undergo surgery in an effort to speed the timeline of healing. Earlier Wednesday, the Hurricanes confirmed that Toney suffered an ankle injury in practice that morning.
LIV’S FUTURE
(AP) -- LIV Golf’s main investor to help it emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy is scrapping plans for a new version because it lacked enough player support, The Financial Times reported Wednesday.
BC Partners Credit had pledged as much as $300 million for what was called “LIV 2.0,” which was planning at least 10 tournaments, an emphasis on teams and equity for players. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil had called the equity a “second bite of the apple.”
But that required enough players to sign up for LIV 2.0. Four players, including Brendan Steele and Cameron Tringale, publicly stated their support. LIV was believed to have as many as 30 players who were willing to stay with the league, but it was lacking the star power.
LIV Golf New Jersey filed for a change of address in the bankruptcy court on Wednesday, from an office in New York to Claymont, Delaware, a commercial office property.
