DREAM SCRAMBLE TO FIND ARENA

The Atlanta Dream will be hosting two games of the WNBA Finals next week, but it’s still not known where those contests will be played.

The Dream, who face the Golden State Valkyries in the best-of-seven series that begins Saturday, will host Games 3 and 4 on Oct. 22 and 24.

Atlanta would love to play those games at State Farm Arena, where the Hawks play, because it seats over 17,000 fans. But that site isn’t available because of a concert by singer Sombr the same night as Game 3 and the Hawks have their home opener the evening of Game 4.

With a 3:30 p.m. EDT start for Game 4, there wouldn’t be enough time to get the arena ready for the Hawks game. If the WNBA Finals go to six games, State Farm Arena also isn’t available for Game 6 on Oct. 29 as the Hawks have another home contest that evening.

The Dream played most of their regular season games at Gateway Center Arena which holds only 3,500 fans. Atlanta moved six regular season games and the three previous home playoff games to State Farm Arena. Atlanta will play all its games next season at State Farm Arena after signing a multi-year deal earlier this month.

Last week Dream president and chief operating officer Morgan Shaw Parker said the team was “finalizing details on their home venue and where we will be playing” for the Finals.

If the games can’t be moved, it wouldn’t be the first time that the league it championship games in a smaller venue. The Washington Mystics hosted three games in the 2019 WNBA Finals in their home, which seats just over 4,000 fans.

There are other bigger facilities in Atlanta that the Dream could potentially play in such as Georgia Tech or Gas South Arena -- site of the ACC Tournament last year. The Dream hosted a Finals game there in 2013.

The Valkyries had their own conflict with Game 2 on Oct. 19 as Doja Cat had a concert that night at Chase Center. The concert was moved to Oct. 25.

COWBOYS HIRE PETTINE

FRISCO, Texas (AP) -- The Dallas Cowboys are bringing former NFL coach Mike Pettine out of retirement to serve as a senior assistant to defensive coordinator Christian Parker, whose debut in his new position is off to a rough start.

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that he and Parker talked to Pettine about joining the staff when he was visiting the 34-year-old Parker in the spring. Pettine chose to stick with the retirement that had been announced a few weeks earlier.

While Schottenheimer and Parker had been discussing for some time the possibility of providing a veteran voice for the young coach, Schottenheimer said they were only going to do it with who they felt was the right person.

The move comes after Dallas lost to Tampa Bay 24-16 when the Buccaneers were starting undrafted free agent quarterback Jalon Daniels in place of Baker Mayfield.

The Cowboys gave up a season-high 419 yards to the Bucs and are at or near the bottom in most defensive categories, just as they were last season when they fired Matt Eberflus after just one year.

Owner Jerry Jones said after the loss the Cowboys were “right where we started relative to our defense.”

Schottenheimer said the hiring of Pettine would have happened regardless of the outcome against Tampa Bay, which dropped Dallas to 2-3 heading into a visit to Green Bay on Sunday night.

“It just took (Pettine) saying this was something he wanted to do,” Schottenheimer said. “I guess maybe he ate too much food in Italy or whatever it was and wanted to get back to work. This is something we had talked about and were finally able to execute it with the right person. That’s the thing I want to keep emphasizing.”

Pettine, who turned 60 last month, spent the past four seasons on the defensive staff of the Minnesota Vikings. He worked with Parker in Green Bay, where Pettine was the defensive coordinator from 2018-20.

Pettine was head coach in Cleveland in 2014-15, going 10-22 and getting fired after a 3-13 season. Before the Browns hired him, Pettine was the defensive coordinator for a year in Buffalo, where he went after four seasons in that role with the New York Jets.

MICHIGAN STICKS WITH QB

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham is sticking with quarterback Bryce Underwood and offensive coordinator Jason Beck.

“Jason is calling plays and Bryce is our guy,” Whittingham said Monday.

The Wolverines (3-2, 0-2 Big) host Penn State (3-3, 0-3) on Saturday in a matchup of disappointing teams led by coaches in their first year with two of the winningest programs in college football.

Michigan was No. 16 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll, fell out after a controversial win over Western Michigan, earned a ranking again after beating then-No. 11 Oklahoma, only to go back to being unranked with losses to then-No. 17 Iowa and Minnesota.

The Wolverines are 0-2 in conference play for the first time since 2014.

The Nittany Lions started the season No. 18. After three wins against Marshall, Temple and Buffalo, they dropped out of the poll with a loss to Wisconsin and stayed unranked with setbacks to Northwestern and then-No. 19 USC.

Since the first snap this season in Ann Arbor, all eyes have been on Underwood.

Coming off a shaky freshman season as the nation’s No. 1 recruit, he has struggled to sustain success in large part because of turnovers.

Underwood, who mishandled the second snap of the season, has lost three fumbles this season and thrown four interceptions with just five passing touchdowns.

He threw interceptions on two straight snaps against the Golden Gophers. He was picked off on an ill-advised pass against the Hawkeyes at their 2, taking away a chance to go ahead by two scores in a game Michigan lost by one point after giving up a game-ending touchdown pass.

Starting at /week.
