REBELS REPEAT

COLUMBIANA -- Crestview’s volleyball program has enjoyed its time in the current Rebel gymnasium. Its opponents certainly have not.

The Rebels clinched a share of their 11th straight league title with a 25-13, 25-4, 25-7 win over Champion on Thursday in what is likely the final volleyball senior night in the gym.

“It makes me a little sad because there is so much history in this gym,” Crestview coach Alisha Auer said. “We’ve created an environment where this is our home. It’s hard for other schools to play here. We’re very proud of playing here and we’re going to miss this.”

Crestview grades 5 through 12 are set to move into the new school next door in the winter barring any construction hangups.

“I think it’s really special that we get to be the last group in here,” Crestview senior Cambriauna Davidson said. “It’s been a different year for us because we don’t have any huge stars like we’ve had in the past. It’s been fun to come together and play.”

Crestview is 16-3 and 12-0 in the MVAC Gray. Second-place Garfield had two losses coming into the night.

“It was tougher this year,” Auer said. “Some of the teams were stronger and we had some nights where we weren’t as strong.”

SATURDAY KICKOFFS

AKRON -- There will be no more Friday night football games in the Akron City Series this season due to fights between spectators.

The remaining games will start at 10 a.m. Saturday for the final three weeks.

Police responded to the Buchtel-Firestone game last Friday because of fights inside and outside the stadium at Ellet High School. The game was canceled at halftime.

LUCKY SHOT

MADRID (AP) -- Daniel Hillier wasn’t happy with how he hit his 8-iron on the 17th hole of the Spanish Open on Thursday. He liked the result, though: a hole-in-one that secured him an all-electric BMW.

Hillier aced the 187-yard par-3 despite the mishit and won a BMW iX5 SUV valued at about $157,000, according to the European tour.

The hole-in-one helped Hillier shoot a 4-under 67 that left him tied for fourth place after Thursday’s first round.

“It was pretty crazy,” the 28-year-old New Zealander said. “To be honest, I toed it quite a bit. Wasn’t too happy with the strike. I was telling it to go the whole way, but it kind of hung in the air for a little bit longer than I thought. And then, yeah, heard some cheers.”

Hillier said he thinks it was his fifth career hole-in-one.

YANKEES’ SLUMP

NEW YORK (AP) -- George Steinbrenner would be firing people.

The New York Yankees failed for the 17th straight season to win a World Series title and watched an opponent celebrate on their infield in October for the third consecutive year. Steinbrenner, their tempestuous controlling owner from 1973-2008, raged at far less frequent failure.

“There’s a standard to winning a championship. It’s black and white. There’s no gray area,” Yankees captain Aaron Judge said Wednesday night after Tampa Bay completed a three-game AL Division Series sweep of New York. “It’s every day you show up to work, every little thing you do is, are you working towards a championship or you’re not?”

New York ranked fourth in the majors in runs, 13th in batting average and second in OPS through May 31, its last game before Judge went on the injured list due to a fractured rib. From June 1 through the end of the season, the Yankees were 24th in runs, 29th in batting average and 27th in OPS. Judge returned for seven games from Sept. 8-16, hitting .174 with three RBIs before a calf strain ended his season.

After batting .382 with 18 runs in a two-game Wild Card Series sweep of Boston, the Yankees hit .130 and were outscored 10-5 by Tampa Bay with a batting order defanged without the three-time AL MVP.

“Look, it’s Aaron Judge, the greatest player in the world,” manager Aaron Boone said. “And that’s a huge, huge person to be missing.”
