CALCUTTA -- East Liverpool emerged with a thrilling 25-13, 20-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-12 win over Beaver Local in a battle of unbeatens Tuesday.
The deciding fifth game was tied at 1, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 10 before the Potters scored four straight points. They took a 14-10 lead on a rally which each team hit the ball over five times.
East Liverpool improves to 5-0, while Beaver Local drops to 3-1.
For the Potters, Cameron Conley had two aces and 20 assists. Addie Jones had four kills. Hailey Board added five kills and four blocks. Addi Smith had two kills and three blocks. Kendall Martin had 16 kills, while Addison Boyle had seven kills and three blocks. Taylor Loedding had two assists and 22 digs. Peyton Tanner had eight assists. Melanie Watson had three aces.
For the Beavers, Lily Schrieber had 23 kills, 16 digs and six assists; Addie Thurik 14 kills, 22 assists and 23 digs; Gianna Congrove 18 digs, two assists and two aces; McKinnley Ferry 20 assists, eight digs and three aces; Olivia Opalenik eight kills and five blocks; Taylor Pease 29 digs; Madison Poppelriter four kills, eight digs and two blocks; Leah Schrieber four kills and 12 digs; and Macie Bourne three kills.
The Beavers won the junior varsity match, 25-17, 25-19. Daisy McKnight had five kills, Makayla Jungfleisch four kills and 17 digs, Maddie Smith four kills, eight assists and three digs and Madi Gaydos 15 digs for the Beavers.
For East Liverpool, Ella Gunning had nine assists, while Katelyn Reeder and Maddie Campbell had three kills each.
East Liverpool hosts Brooke on Thursday, while Beaver Local visits at Weir for a tri-match at 10 a.m. Saturday.
UNITED 3, SOUTHERN 0
HANOVERTON -- United junior Rileah Phillips had four aces and 24 assists, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Eagles swept Southern, 25-14, 25-20, 25-7, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Tuesday.
The Eagles won their third straight to improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the EOAC.
Lily Erb totaled eight kills, Chloe Andelo seven kills and two blocks, Brennan Ritchie seven kills and Baylee Smith three aces and 12 digs.
For the Indians, Katie Kellogg had seven kills, Kalayah Crute three kills and Kiah Sloan two kills and two blocks.
United also won the junior varsity match, 25-18, 25-10. Aubrey Danko had 10 points, four aces and four kills, Ella Humphrey 11 points and two kills and Gracelyn Simmons seven points, two aces and five kills for the Eagles. Kenzie Sloan had four points for the Indians.
Both teams play Thursday with United at Wellsville and Southern hosting East Palestine.
EAST LIVERPOOL 3, INDIAN CREEK 1
RAYLAND -- The East Liverpool volleyball team topped Indian Creek, 25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 25-10, Monday.
Leaders for the Potters were Kendall Martin 12 kils and three aces, Addie Jones 10 kills, Hailey Board five kills and four blocks, Addi Smith five kills, Cameron Conley five aces and two assists, Taylor Loedding five aces and 18 digs, Lillie White four aces and eight digs, Addisyn Boyle three kills, Peyton Tanner 12 assists and Hadleigh Byrne eight digs.
East Liverpool also won the junior varsity match, 25-12, 25-22. Katelyn Reeder had five aces and five kills, Kenney Talbott four aces and three kills and Ella Gunning two aces and 11 assists.
YOUNGSTOWN 3, SOUTHERN 2
SALINEVILLE -- The new Youngstown Defenders volleyball team defeated Southern Local in a marathon on Monday 21-25, 25-12, 25-21, 19-25, 15-6.
Youngstown High School is a merger of the former East and Chaney high schools in the city.
For Southern, Kalayah Crute had 12 points and seven kills. Delaney Beadnell had nine points and eight assists. Addy Martin had nine points and four digs. Katie Kellogg had seven kills and five digs. Kiah Sloan had six kills and two blocks. Natalia Lopez added five kills.
Southern won the jayvee match 19-25, 25-19, 29-27. Emma Boyle had 20 points and six aces for the Indians.
