CHESTER BEATS YOUNGSTOWN

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — The Chester Old-Timers knocked off Youngstown 10-6 on Sunday at Oak Glen High School.

The 4-0 Old-Timers were led by Joe Krause who had a triple, double and two singles. Shawn Allen had a double and two singles. Mike Homer and Rob Fester had two singles each. Kevin Ferell was the winning pitcher.

Chester hosts unbeaten Poland at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Oak Glen.

ROHBECK TO PLAY IN OVAC GAME

WELLSBURG, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s James Rohbeck is the the only area representative scheduled to play in the OVAC Baseball All-Star Game scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday at Brooke High School.

CASHDOLLAR NAMED TOP COACH

CALCUTTA — Beaver Local’s Mark Cashdollar was recently named the OVAC Softball Coach of the Year. Cashdollar led the Beavers to the OVAC Class 4A title and a 24-5 record.

CRUZ WILL MISS WEEKS

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates placed center fielder Oneil Cruz on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a broken left hand.

Cruz was injured while sliding into the plate during the fourth inning of a loss to Atlanta on Saturday. Cruz was available as a pinch-runner on Sunday and the club had been hopeful he would avoid a stint on the IL. But additional tests revealed non-displaced fractures between his ring finger and his pinkie.

The move, retroactive to Monday, means the Pirates will have to try to stay in the mix in the NL Central without one of their most productive hitters. Cruz is hitting .264 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs. His 98 strikeouts also lead the majors.

Pittsburgh recalled utility player Billy Cooke from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Cruz’s roster spot. Cooke is hitting .190 in 32 games this year for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates also placed catcher Henry Davis on the paternity list and recalled catcher Rafael Flores Jr. from Triple-A.

GAME 3 RAKES IN BIG RATINGS

NEW YORK (AP) — Victor Wembanyama’s 32-point performance in San Antonio’s 115-111 win over the New York Knicks on Monday night was the most-watched NBA Finals Game 3 since 1998.

The game averaged 23.8 million viewers and peaked at 26.3 million late in the fourth quarter, according to data released by Nielsen on Wednesday. That’s the largest television audience since Super Bowl 60 on Feb. 8.

The finals are averaging 19.1 million, the second most-watched since ABC and ESPN took over the broadcast in 2003. That represents a 114% increase over last year’s series between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers.

“NBA Finals All‒Access with The Pat McAfee Show” averaged 1.1 million on ESPN, making it the most-watched NBA alternate telecast on the network.

ROUGH START TO WILLIAMS’ COMEBACK

LONDON (AP) — Serena Williams’ doubles campaign at Queen’s Club could be over after one match.

Victoria Mboko, the American star’s doubles partner, retired from her singles match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday after sustaining a knee injury in the second set.

Williams and Mboko had won their opening doubles match Tuesday — in the 44-year-old Williams’ return to professional tennis after nearly four years away from the sport — and are scheduled to play again Thursday.

As of Wednesday night, Mboko and Williams remained on Thursday’s schedule to face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals. It’s set to be the last match of the day at the HSBC Championships.

While trying to return a shot against Pliskova, the 19-year-old Canadian slipped behind the baseline and immediately grabbed her left knee. Mboko had lost the first set 6-2 and was up 4-3 in the second against the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up, who was facing a break point.

Mboko got up on her own but then told a physiotherapist there was “no stability right now.”
