Wellsville’s Kersey leaps to regional berth

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Area long jumpers leaped their way to the regional berths Thursday.
Wellsville senior Clayten Kersey won the Springfield Division V district title with a jump of 20-feet-5 3/4 on his first attempt. He had the second-best jump on his next jump of 19-10.
Kersey, a state qualifier last season, had been the district runner-up the past two years.
Two East Palestine long jumpers also advanced as senior Drew Bycroft was third (19-7) and junior RJ May was fourth (19-6 1/4).
The top four boys and top two girls in each event advance to the Cuyahoga Heights regional next week.
Heartland Christian senior standout Rebecca Geiss won the girls 3200-meter run in 12:15.13, edging out her future college teammate, Gianna Ritchie of Lake Center Christian.
They will be running for Palm Beach Atlantic University, an NCAA Division II program.
Geiss and Ritchie are also entered in Saturday’s finals of the 800 and 1600 runs and 1600 relay.
Lisbon sophomore Brooklyn Klein was second in the girls high jump, matching her personal best by clearing 4-10.
She made her first jump at 4-6 and cleared 4-8 and 4-9 on her second attempts.
Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas sophomore Alyssa Stanek won with a personal-best 4-foot-11.
The Heartland Christian boys 3200 relay team also advanced. Senior Mason Sharo and sophomores Easton Jones, Micaiah Reigstad and Nathanael Denny finished third (9:02.98).
The 3200 relay had seven boys teams and three girls teams.
The district meet wraps up Saturday with the remaining running events at 10 a.m. and the running events at 11:30 a.m.
