Jones was third in the shot put Wednesday and no county athletes got through the Austintown Division IV regional finals Friday.

Jones topped the first flight in the discus Friday with a toss of 114-feet-0 on her first attempt. That was her best toss as she placed seventh overall.

The top five finishers in each event advance to the Division IV state meet June 4-5 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

There also will be three at-large state qualifiers from the three regionals, but Jones missed out in the discus.

She will be in the shot put at the state meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Norwayne senior Haley Bittinger beat out sophomore teammate Hannah Froelich on her last attempt with a winning discus toss of 133-9.

The highest county finisher on Friday was United sophomore Taylor Simmons, who was sixth in the girls 400-meter dash in a personal-best 60.14 seconds.

South Range senior Taylor Dado earned a state berth by finishing third in a personal-best 58.66 seconds.

The Fairless boys (74 points) and Norway girls (72 1/2) won the regional team titles.

The Southern girls scored the most points by area teams with eight — as Jones was third in the shot put and seventh in discus.
