Golden Bears return to state

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s softball team will get a chance to defend its Class AA state championship.
Fueled by an attack that included 11 hits — including five extra base hits — the Bears dumped Doddridge County 8-5 on Saturday in a Region 1 final in the double-elimination tournament.
Danica Holden sparked the Golden Bears with three hits including a double and two RBIs. Kylie Robinson added a double and triple, while Mattie Carney had two hits. Brayley Lash added a double. Macy Hartung had a double as well.
In the circle, Carney went all seven innings and struck out 10 while walking four.
The state softball double elimination tournament will begin on May 27 at Little Creek Park in South Charleston. Seeding will be determined by coaches.
Oak Glen is 18-10 and is ranked 9th overall in the state by MaxPreps and second in Class AA. Weir High (20-7) was the other Region 1 tournament winner.
The Bears went 30-10 last season to win the school’s first softball title since 1998, but lost many key pieces to graduation.

BASEBALL
Oak Glen 10, Madonna 5
WEIRTON, W.Va. — Caiddin Dittman had three hits, while Gannon Cline added a double and two RBIs as Oak Glen downed Weirton Madonna 10-5 on Saturday in regular season play.
Maddox Chaffin, Paxton Ware and Max Murray had two hits each. Kaden Dragisich went 3 1/3 innings with a walk and a strikeout to get the win.
Oak Glen (17-9) will travel to Williamstown on Monday for a Class AA, Region 1 contest in the double elimination tournament.

Wellsville at Malvern (DH)
MALVERN — Wellsville’s baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday 11-1 and
In the first game, Malvern’s Jaxon Jones and Gage Haught combined for a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and five walks. Colin Kessler took the loss with eight walks and 11 earned runs in four innings.
The Tigers lost the second game 17-3 in five innings.
Austin Watkins had the Tigers’ only hit. Cooper Frank went 3 1/3 innings with four walks and a strikeout for Wellsville, 0-19.
The Tigers are at Kidron Central Christian on Friday for a tournament game.
