Thurik has Beaver Local on a roll entering OVAC

BELLAIRE — Sophomore pitcher Addison Thurik gave the Beaver Local softball team everything it needed Saturday.

Thurik tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks and went 2-for-2 at the plate with a two-run home run in a 7-1 win over Bellaire.

The Beavers improve to 17-3 and have held opponents to one run or less in nine of their last 11 victories.

Mya Anderson added a solo home run in the seventh inning, giving the Beavers 23 home runs on the season.

Brylee Curtis collected two hits. Ciara Call tripled and Ally Wright and Macie Bourne each doubled.

Jaela Phillips got both of Bellaire’s hits, including a triple. Bellaire drops to 9-14.

Beaver Local will host Salem today before opening OVAC Tournament play Tuesday as the top seed against fourth-seeded Oak Glen at the I-470 Complex.

Martins Ferry 6, Beaver Local 5

MARTINS FERRY — Ford Hughes tossed a four-hitter and gave up two earned runs and Christian Shutler went 4-for-4 in leading Martins Ferry past Beaver Local, 6-5, in baseball action Saturday.

Martins Ferry improves to 10-5. Beaver Local had its five-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 11-7.

Hunter Shutler added three hits and Eli Smith and Clayton Snyder each scored two runs.

Martins Ferry scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Eli Smith led off with a home run and the second run came on a two-out error.

The Beavers rallied with two outs in the top of the seventh. Andre Weigand walked and Paxton Grimes doubled. Peyton Martin drove them in with a single to cut the deficit to 6-5, but the game ended on a popup.

Grimes and Braxton Hickman hit doubles for the Beavers.

Grimes took the loss, giving up four earned runs with eight strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Jett Johnson pitched one inning, giving up two runs, one earned, on one hit with one strikeout.

The Beavers will host East Palestine on Thursday.

Lisbon 5, Malvern 3

MALVERN — Mason Jones went 3-for-4 with two runs and Bryce Esarey doubled, singled and scored twice in Lisbon’s 5-3 win over Malvern in baseball action Saturday.

Devin Kelly also drove in two runs

Lisbon evens its record at 7-7, while Malvern drops to 5-9.

Esarey got the victory, allowing three earned runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out 10 and walked three.

Logan Sturgeon pitched two scoreless innings for the save. He gave up one hit with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Blue Devils scored twice in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead.

Dakota Barger paced Malvern with three hits and two RBIs. Darnell Jackson added a double.

Lisbon will play at Southern today.
