ST. CLAIRSVILLE — East Liverpool senior Maddox Roach is always ahead of the pack.

Roach ran away with victories in the 800 and 1600 meters at the St. Clairsville Coach Dave Porterfield Invitational on Friday.

Roach won the 800 meters by 3 1/2 seconds with a personal-best time of 1:56.26 after winning the 1600 meters by 17 1/2 seconds in a season-best 4:23.87. There were 37 runners in the 1600 and 34 in the 800 at Red Devil Stadium.

Also for East Liverpool, sophomore Meshach Harris and senior Kailynn Kirby had second-place finishes.

Meshach posted a pair of personal bests in finishing second in the 300 hurdles (41.80 seconds) and third in the 110 hurdles (15.85). Indian Valley junior Carsen Hostetler — the Division II state runner-up in the 300 hurdles last year — won both events in 14.62 and 38.45 seconds, respectively.

Kirby was second in the girls high jump (4-foot-10).

Fifteen schools participated with the Steubenville boys and John Marshall girls winning team titles.
