Beavers answer the call

CALCUTTA — The Beaver Local softball team is doing everything right.
Ciara Call and Mya Anderson hit three-run home runs and Ally Wright added a solo shot and sophomore Addison Thurik tossed a one-hitter as the Beavers beat Salem, 10-0, in five innings Monday.
The Beavers are 18-3 and enter the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 4A tournament as the top seed. They will play fourth-seeded Oak Glen in a semifinal at 5 p.m. today at the I-470 Complex. Oak Glen beat Beaver Local 4-2 in the season opener on March 24.
Salem drops to 2-8 heading into today’s game at Minerva.
Thurik was dominating, throwing 45 strikes on 54 pitches with 11 strikeouts and no walks. After third baseman Ally Wright caught a low line drive to open the game, Thurik struck out the next eight Quakers swinging. She retired the first 11 batters before Aniya Jones hit a fly ball off the center field fence with two outs in the fourth inning.
The Beavers, ranked No. 9 in Div. IV in the latest Ohio High School Softball Coaches Association poll, have held opponents to one run or less in 10 of their last 12 victories.
Call drove in four runs on two hits, while Wright and Anderson each had three RBIs.
The Beavers came out swinging with four of the first batters scoring. Gianna Congrove and Brylee Curtis walked and Thurik reached base on an error.
Wright’s foul fly ball brought home Congrove for a 1-0 lead and Call followed with a three-run homer to left field.
The Beavers widened the lead to 9-0 in the second inning. Congrove and Thurik hit singles and Curtis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wright hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Congrove again for a 5-0 lead.
Call followed with an RBI single and Anderson had a three-run homer over the left field fence that landed on the baseball field.
Wright added a solo shot to round out the scoring.
The Beavers’ three home runs Monday give them 26 on the season.
Salem starter Morgane Blaine took the loss. She gave up nine runs, eight earned, on five hits in two innings. She struck out one and walked three. Morgan Colian pitched the last two innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with one strikeout.

Wellsville at United (DH)
HANOVERTON — United’s softball team picked up a pair of wins over Wellsville on Monday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play.
In the first game, United won 17-0 in five innings. Madison Aegerter had a single, double and home run with two RBIs.
Payten Kekel had three hits including a triple with four RBIs. Chloe Angelo had a single, double and an RBI.
Aegerter struck out 15 and walked none in the circle.
Makayla Landess had two hits for Wellsville, while Madelyn Landess took the loss with four walks and a strikeout.
In the second game, the Eagles won 10-1 with Josie Wargo had two hits and two RBIs. Chloe Angelo had three hits including two doubles, while Callie Coons had two hits. Jillian Dietrich had a double.
Aegerter was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts and a walk in three innings.
Makayla Landess had a single and a double for the Tigers. Makayla Landess had three strikeouts and a walk.
United (13-5, 10-0 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference) is at Minerva on Wednesday. The Eagles share the EOAC lead with Columbiana and will play the Clippers on May 4 and May 6 for the title.
Wellsville (4-13, 2-8 in the EOAC) hosts Toronto on Wednesday.

Lisbon 10, Southern 4
SALINEVILLE — Kamryn Peruchetti had a single, double and an RBI, while striking out eight and walking one in the circle as Lisbon stopped Southern 10-4 on Monday.
Also for Lisbon, Aria Reckner had two hits and two RBIs. Emelia Cook had a double, while Lexi Roush also had a double.
For Southern, Riley Digman had two doubles and two RBIs. Raelea Carosiello added a single and double.
Addison Anderenok was the losing pitcher with two strikeouts and nine walks in four innings.
Lisbon is 5-11 overall and 4-5 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.
Southern fell to 6-10 and 3-7 in the EOAC.
Lisbon hosts Lowellville today.
Southern is at Lisbon on Wednesday.
