Tomsic, Schmidt reach finals

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Two Oak Glen wrestlers will go for state titles today in the final day of the West Virginia Div. II state wrestling tournament at Mountain Health Arena.

Jordan Tomsic and Noah Schmidt both won two matches on Friday to advance to their respective weight class finals.

Tomsic, a junior, earned his spot in the 106 pound final with a 5-2 win over Aaron Barb of East Hardy in the semifinal. He will meet Cameron sophomore Maverick Lilley in a rematch of the regional final for the state title. Lilley (38-4) is ranked first in the weight class by the West Virginia Wrestling Coaches Association, while Tomsic (35-16) is third. Lilley scored a 15-0 technical fall on Tomsic in the regional final.

Schmidt, a battle-tested senior with more than 150 career wins, won the season rubber match against Independence’s Landon Burleson in the 215-pound final. Schmidt went to overtime to score a 5-2 win after falling behind 2-0 in the second period. Top-ranked Burleson and second-ranked Schmidt wrestled two times before this season with each scoring 4-1 victories. Schmidt (47-6) will take on Shady Spring senior Joey Cowger (30-7). Cowger was a runner-up in Region 3 and is ranked third in the weight class.

Senior Wyatt Wolanski reached the 144-pound semifinal but was defeated by Williamstown’s Jake Junkins by a 9-2 decision. Wolanski, who placed fourth at 132 as a freshman and fifth at 132 as a junior, will seek his highest finish at state on Saturday in the consolation bracket.
