HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Oak Glen senior Noah Schmidt ended his high school career at the top of the podium on Saturday the West Virginia state wrestling championships at Mountain Health Arena.

Schmidt conquered Shady Spring senior Joey Cowger in a 7-1 decision in the 215-pound Div. II final.

Schmidt scored a point an escape point early in the second period and closed the match with two takedowns in the final seconds to pull away.

No. 2 ranked Schmidt (47-6) dropped down from 285 this season because he believed the pathway to a state title was clearer. Last season at 285 he lost a 12-3 major decision to Herbert Hoover’s Connor Facemire in the final.

Cowger, ranked third in the state, ended his season 30-8.

Golden Bear junior Jordan Tomsic capped his season by finishing as the runner-up at 106 pounds. Cameron junior Maverick Lilley (39-4) scored a takedown and four-point near fall in the first period to run away with a 9-3 win over Tomsic.

Tomsic finished his season 36-16. Lilley had beaten Tomsic by technical fall in the regional final.

Oak Glen junior Alexandra Watkins became the first Golden Bear girl to place at state as she finished second at 152. Watkins, who finished fourth at regionals, was pinned by Tyler Consolidated’s Eliana Winfrey in 1:09 in the final. Watkins finished her season at 33-8.

Golden Bear senior Wyatt Wolanski won two matches on Saturday to take third at 144, his highest career showing at state.

Wolanksi beat Herbert Hoover’s Brayden Tolley 1-0 in the consolation semifinal and then topped Clay County’s Blake Coleman 4-1 in the third-place final. Wolanski finished his season 50-8.

Oak Glen finished eighth as a team with 75 points which was just ahead of Weir High’s 64.5. Ripley ran away with the Div. II team title with 191.5 points.

Nine boys state champions came out of Region 1.
