Rhodes, Kalaher top picks

CANTON — Crestview senior Addison Rhodes and Heartland Christian junior Collin Kalaher are more than district champions.

Both were named players of the year in their respective divisions on the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association’s 2025-26 All-Northeast Inland District basketball teams announced Monday.

Rhodes is the Division V district player of the year for a second straight season and is a four-time first-team selection for good reason.

She led the Rebels to a 23-3 season and their first district title since 2007. She is Columbiana County’s all-time leading OHSAA scorer with 2,484 career points.

Rhodes put up big numbers again this season, averaging 31.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.6 steals a game — all team highs.

Kalaher, a two-time district first-teamer, shares the Division VII boys player of the year honor with Medina Christian junior R.J. Walgate.

Kalaher has guided the Lions to a school-best 21-4 record and their first-ever district title.

Third-seeded Heartland will play second-seeded Fairport Harding in a regional semifinal at 6 p.m. today at Barberton High School.

Kalaher will be leading the charge as he averages a team-high 23.0 points a game along with six steals, four assists and four steals. He has scored 1,403 career points.

West Branch’s Walt DeShields repeats as the Division IV coach of the year. After the board of education voted to note renew his coaching contract last March, public outcry got his job back and he led the Warriors to a 23-4 season and a third straight Eastern Buckeye Conference title. He has a 403 wins in 21 seasons as head coach.

Six other area players join Rhodes and Kalaher on the district first team — Salem junior Abby Knickerbocker, West Branch freshman Madi Hoopes and West Branch senior Jeremiah Thomas in Division IV, and Lisbon senior AJ Ramgeet, Columbiana senior Cooper Brown and Southern freshman Katie Kellogg in Division IV.

Knickerbocker led the Salem girls to a 13-win season as she averaged a team-high 16.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals a game.

Hoopes topped the Warriors by averaging 13.3 points a game. She helped West Branch to a 23-win season and a regional championship game appearance.

Thomas was the top threat for the 16-9 West Branch boys, averaging 14.1 points a game.

Ramgeet and Brown led their teams 16-win seasons and a share of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title.

Ramgeet was Lisbon’s offensive threat, averaging 23.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals a game.

Brown paced the Clippers by averaging 16.0 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 4.1 blocks a game.

Kellogg led the Indians to a school-best 24-1 season and their first district final appearance since 1995.

She was the area’s second-leading scorer behind Rhodes, averaging 22.8 points, 8.2 assists, 10.0 rebounds and 7.0 steals a game — all team highs.

Getting second-team honors were West Branch senior Gavin Gregory and West Branch junior Audrey Eaton in Division IV; Southern senior Allyssa Shroades in Division VI; and Heartland Christian junior Brody Conaway in Division VII.

Receiving honorable mention were Salem’s Deontay Steele and Karlie Sampson and West Branch’s Grady Hirst, Tallie Muniz and Alli Kanagy in Division IV; Crestview’s Tyler Savage, Ava Bucey, Brianna Baker and Karli Perry and Columbiana’s Annah Clemmer and Evy Rapp in Division V; Columbiana’s Senator Johnson, East Palestine’s Drew Bycroft and Jacklyn Ogle, Lisbon’s Blaine Barnes, Southern’s Kalayah Crute and Makenna Jones, and United’s Jason Pratt, Kota Shasteen, Maelee Smith and Reagan Good in Division VI; Heartland’s Isaiah Matthews and Sarah Reynolds, Lisbon’s Jayden Smyth and Lylah Brown, Leetonia’s Ethan Mathia and Wellsville’s Darnell Roe and Austin Adkins in Division VII.
