Nobody in county could slow Rhodes down

LISBON — Crestview senior Addison Rhodes has another trophy to add to her collection on the wall at home.

“There are four rows of them,” she said.

Rhodes scored 37 points with nine three-pointers in leading her away team to an 84-47 win at the Columbiana County Classic on Sunday night.

“We saw her in the regular season (a 70-33 loss to the Rebels on Feb. 4),” said Salem’s Maddy Andres, the MVP for the home team. “You can’t stop her.”

She said Rhodes is the best player she has played against.

“She’s a good teammate, too,” Andres said. “It’s not all about her. She’s always encouraging the other players. I like that as a player and as a person.”

Early on, it was about Rhodes’ shooting as she had five three-pointers and scored 21 points to give the away team a 26-6 lead just over nine minutes into the game.

“I just wanted to have fun,” Rhodes said. “That was my main goal. I have seen all of these girls before.”

Following Rhodes were Columbiana’s Megan Moser with 13 points, Crestview’ Ava Bucey with 10 and Columbiana’s Evy Rapp with nine.

Rhodes said among the trophies that she values most are as Ohio Division V Player of the Year, the Columbiana County Player of the Year and Columbiana County’s all-time leading scorer.

“I love this,” she said of her County Classic MVP trophy.

Rhodes scored 26 points in the first half and got her teammates involved. Of her team’s last seven baskets of the first half, Rhodes scored five points and had four assists, three to Moser, for a 53-16 halftime lead.

The margin never got below 32 points in the second half.

Andres topped the home team with 15 points, followed by Shroades with nine.

“I was impressed with (Shroades,” Andres said. “She always had a smile on her face.”

Game notes

¯ Rhodes had her picture taken with former Lisbon teammates Jayden Smyth, Lylah Brown and Maddilynn Klein after the game.

“We kind of had small talk,” she said. “It was fun to play with everyone.”

Rhodes played with them through the eight grade before transferring to Crestview, a move based on basketball.

“It was a good decision,” she said.

¯ When announcing Rhodes winning the MVP with nine three-pointers, Lisbon boys coach Chris Huckshold noted, “That’s eight more than her brother had in his career. Sorry Tate.”

Tate Wallen remembers his only three-pointer came his senior season at Lisbon against Oak Glen.

“He still thinks he can beat me,” Addison said. “But he can’t.”

¯ Rhodes will wrap up her high school career in the Ohio North-South Game on April 24 at Olentangy Liberty High School.

¯ Rhodes will be playing for Fairfield University in Connecticut. She said she will be heading there in June and the team will have a tour in Spain in August.

¯ Salem’s Garyn Rohm was called for a foul by her father and official, Nick.

“I thought it was funny,” Andres said. “The whole game we were talking to him. He said he was going to start the game by giving her a technical.”

¯ Andres will return as one of the area’s top throwers during track season.

“I like basketball because of the people I’m around,” she said. “I like track because I’m good at it.”
