Maysville ends Potters’ season

Maysville 78, East Liverpool 36

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Zanesville Maysville boys basketball team is playing like a state champion again.

The defending state champion and top-seeded Panthers pulled away from ninth-seeded East Liverpool, 78-36, in a Division IV district semifinal Tuesday at the ECO Center.

East Liverpool kept it close in the first quarter, trailing 23-20 as freshman Jayce Douglas scored 12 points. But the Potters scored only 12 points in the final three quarters.

Gator Nichols, the Ohio Division IV Player of the Year last season, leads Maysville (23-1) into the regional final against fifth-seeded Carrollton (16-7) at 7 p.m. Friday. Carrollton advanced with a 58-56 win over Beaver Local on Tuesday.

The Panthers have won 23 straight games since a season-opening 69-65 loss to Cincinnati Taft.

Maysville has an experienced squad, playing eight seniors and two juniors. Meanwhile, East Liverpool played one senior, two juniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen.

Kane Roehrig led the Panthers with a game-high 22 points, including four three-pointers in the first half and two more in the third quarter.

Nichols added 19 points after being limited to five in the first half. Landon Iden followed with 16 points.

Douglas topped the Potters with 13 points. Thoren Long added eight points and Javan Dawson seven.

A young East Liverpool squad ends the season with an 11-13 record.

West Branch 65, Streetsboro 49

BELOIT — West Branch swept two basketball tournament games from Streetsboro in less than a week.

The seventh-seeded West Branch boys ran past 12th-seeded Streetsboro, 65-49, in a Division IV sectional semifinal Tuesday.

On Saturday, the West Branch girls beat Streetsboro 50-40 in a district final Saturday.

The West Branch boys (16-8) will play fourth-seeded Cleveland Glenville (15-9), the defending Division IV state runner-up, in a district final at 7 p.m. Friday at Wooster Triway. Glenville advanced with a 79-68 win over 27th-seeded Mogadore Field.

The Rockets could not keep up with West Branch’s Jeremiah Thomas, who had a game-high 23 points.

Gavin Gregory collected 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists and sophomore Landon Coffee had nine points and five rebounds. Kasen Waver added seven points and four rebounds. Grady Hirst contributed six points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals and Zach Coffee had six points and four rebounds.

A Chase Gee three-pointer off a pass from Gregory late in the first quarter put the Warriors ahead 16-10.

Hirst threw a long inbounds pass to Gregory for a layup that put West Branch up 31-19. Thomas had consecutive layups and Weaver had a late three throw to give the Warriors a 36-22 halftime lead.

West Branch scored five quick points to open the third quarter as Thomas made a three-pointer off a Gregory pass and Hirst passed to Weaver for a layup for a 41-22 lead.

The closest the Rockets got after that was 14 points. Landon Coffee sealed the victory with a fourth-quarter dunk.

It was the Warriors’ 13 win in their last 16 games.

Streetsboro lost three of its last five games to finish with a 13-11 record.
